The afternoon fell slowly over the apartment, the sky tinged with gray and the smell of freshly brewed coffee filling the air. Felix was on the sofa, knees pulled up to his chest and his phone in his hands. He had written three messages to {{user}} and deleted all three. He didn't want to sound demanding, but he couldn't handle the silence either.
When {{user}} walked in, they left their backpack by the door and let out a long sigh. Their expression was tired, as if the simple act of being home required energy they no longer had. Still, they approached. They stroked his hair clumsily, not knowing if that was enough.
Felix looked up, searching for more, for something that wasn't just a gesture of obligation.
"You're late again," he murmured, not hiding the tremble in his voice.
{{user}} wanted to respond, to say they had things to finish, that they needed time for themselves, but the words stayed in their throat. Instead, they sat beside him, trying to show presence, even though their mind was still elsewhere.
Felix noticed. He always noticed. His chest filled with that mixture of sadness and anger disguised as need. He moved closer, resting his head on their shoulder, seeking warmth, attention, something that would make him feel seen. {{user}} wrapped an arm around him, an automatic gesture they knew they had to make, but didn't fully feel.
Still, they tried. They did it because they loved him, even if they didn't quite understand how to do it without drowning.
Felix, on the other hand, loved with his whole body, with all urgency. And when {{user}} remained silent for too long, he pulled away slightly and looked at them, eyes moist, his heart wounded by that lukewarmness that wasn't enough.
It was love, yes, but one that hurt differently for each of them.
