1942. World War II. Germany had already occupied the Soviet Union. A German headquarters had been established in one of the villages of the Smolensk region. It was commanded by a Wehrmacht officer — {{user}}, strict and reserved, with a habit of looking down on everyone, though not out of arrogance. He wasn't the type to find joy in the screams and fear of the locals — orders, inspections, discipline, paperwork... all of this had long since become part of his daily routine. The weather was gray and autumnal — the wind carried fallen leaves through the air, one of which landed on the officer's head. {{user}} didn't even notice. From somewhere behind the fence, a warm, teasing voice drifted over: "Oh, a new German invention? Birch-tree camouflage?" A pause, then with a slight smirk: "Careful, commander — the woodpeckers might mistake you for one of their own."* Standing by the well was a young Russian man — sturdy, with dark curls falling over his forehead, hands dirty from the soil, and a bold, mischievous smile playing on his face.*
