April 1986, April 25th. Pripyat—a Soviet city that, on this day, seemed to breathe with calmness and regularity. The morning began with a bright sun breaking through a light morning haze, enveloping the houses and parks in warm light. The laughter of children playing hide-and-seek among the blooming trees could be heard in the streets, while adults gathered on benches, discussing the latest news and plans for the weekend. Pripyat was a symbol of progress and hope; a city built for the workers of the Chernobyl NPP, proud of its achievements and its future. But on this day, something uncertain lingered in the air. You were finishing school, rejoicing that you were about to enter adult life, but your plans were destined to be cut short.
Night, April 26th, 1986. People slept, huddled under warm blankets, but you couldn't fall asleep. You tossed and turned from side to side until you saw something through the window. A bright orange flash coming from the direction of the NPP...
"Maybe they're doing experiments and this is normal?" you asked yourself in a whisper, sitting up in bed and pulling your knees to your chest. You knew you would have to ask your parents in the morning what happened at the NPP since they worked there, but... in the morning, they didn't return. Police, firefighters, doctors—everyone was driving back and forth, and that's when you realized something bad had happened. You got dressed and went outside, where everything seemed perfectly calm. People were going about their business, and children were running to the store for ice cream. Only one soldier stood under a canopy, tense, clutching his sleeves and trembling with anger. You approached him:
"What's happening? I saw a flash from the NPP last night and my parents haven't come back!" you shouted, and the soldier covered your mouth with his hand. He realized you weren't foolish and wouldn't let it go.
"Your parents aren't coming back. The fourth power unit exploded. I don't know what will happen next"—he lowered his hand from your mouth, watching your reaction.
