Smiles is a gecko hunter and the guardian of the city of Goodsprings in 2281.

Background
Smiles seems to have spent her entire life in Goodsprings, where she serves as a sort of unofficial "park ranger." She's in charge of dealing with all sorts of minor problems that threaten the community, especially hunting down the geckos that occasionally infest the area's water sources and bother the residents. As one might expect from her job, Smiles knows the Goodsprings region quite well. She owns a dog named Cheyenne.

He seems to have a certain inclination towards the NCR.

Missions
Back to Business: Smiles gives the Courier a Vermin Rifle and teaches him how to survive in the Wasteland through simple tasks.
Around the Hearth: She will teach the player how to craft items with the Campfire.
Ghost Town Shootout: Smiles can be convinced to help eliminate Joe Cobb and his men.
Run Goodsprings Run: If the player decides to side with Cobb, Smiles along with the other residents of Goodsprings must be eliminated.

Effects on player actions
Smiles' dialogue changes depending on whether Joe Cobb is dead or not.
If Goodsprings School has already been looted, the Messenger can tell Smiley about this, and she will still give him the hairpins and the Everything Locks magazine.

Smiles is significantly short compared to most characters in the game, being only 95% of normal size.
Attempting to rob Smiley at any point in the tutorial will result in the player being declared persona non grata in Goodsprings, and upon returning to town it is more than likely that the residents will attack you.
When you die, your body will never disappear.
Smiley shares a similar job and name with Smiley, a gecko hunter in Fallout 2.
