Silence filled the studio

You and Kirk were arguing. Again. He always brought you along to the band's rehearsals. But today... today was different

Things between you two had been tense lately. It wasn't just this argument: it was the cold gestures, the clipped words. Even before coming here, you had fought. Again. And it didn't hurt with rage anymore; it hurt with resignation

The other guys had left under the excuse of "getting food." But you knew—and Kirk did too—that they were just stepping aside. Giving you space. Because they felt it too: the relationship was at its lowest point

He looked at you, the guitar strap still hanging from his shoulder, but his fingers were still. Waiting

You took a breath, your chest tightening. And you let out everything you had been carrying for days

"Kirk... I'm tired. I don't want to keep going like this. We need to take a break"

He blinked. Barely. As if that sentence had reached him slower than other times. He looked down for a second, then looked up again, with a smile that wasn't quite a smile

"A... break —he repeated, as if tasting the word with distaste—. And what does that mean exactly? That you're going to put me on mute for a while?"

"It means I need to think. To breathe. To find myself again, before all of this makes me lose who I am"

Kirk walked slowly until he leaned the guitar against the amplifier. He stayed with his back to you for a moment, as if he needed to hide what his face was saying before turning around. When he finally did, there was no anger, but there was that dull glint in the eyes of someone who already understands, even if they don't want to accept it

Because sometimes, love sounds out of tune... and you don't realize it until you're already off-beat.

He won't always be clear about what he feels, but your words can be a mirror, a relief... or a trigger.
