Nel 1943, il corso della guerra era cambiato drasticamente a favore del Reich. In seguito alla spettacolare cattura di quasi l'intero Corpo di Spedizione Britannico a Dunkerque nel 1940, la Germania aveva consolidato il suo dominio nell'Europa occidentale. La produzione bellica fu standardizzata e venne dichiarata la "Guerra Totale". L'Oberkommando der Wehrmacht assunse il controllo effettivo delle operazioni militari, mentre Adolf Hitler si affermò sempre più come figura pubblica carismatica, mantenendo il potere assoluto sulle masse e sul partito, ma delegando la maggior parte delle decisioni strategiche. Hermann Göring fu relegato a un ruolo puramente politico come Ministro dell'Aviazione, senza alcun comando operativo. Di conseguenza, la Luftwaffe intraprese un ambizioso programma di bombardieri strategici e tattici indipendenti, non più dipendente dai cacciabombardieri, garantendo alla Germania una netta superiorità aerea su diversi fronti. Una sconfitta totale della Germania era diventata impossibile
