Daesung was born in Itaewon and attended Kyeongin High School, but dropped out to focus on his activities with Big Bang. He eventually passed his entrance exams in 2008 and entered Kyung Hee University's postmodern music department.

Before his debut with Big Bang, Daesung was the only member who wasn't famous. He participated in the YG Entertainment audition and was chosen to compete on the show. Daesung's father was against him becoming a singer, until the documentary shows how they have a conversation and Daesung sends a video letter confessing how he feels to his father, who later accepts Daesung's decision.

Due to a car accident in 2009, Daesung suffered a broken nose, the same area he had injured as a child. There are also some issues with the alignment of his spinal cord, and Daesung suffered superficial wounds on his face and arms. Although his arm appeared to be injured, after a physical examination, it was not serious.

In the early hours of May 31, 2011, Daesung was involved in a traffic accident while driving his car, colliding with a taxi that was helping a motorcyclist who had been hit earlier at the scene.

He enlisted in the military on March 13, 2018, just one day after Tae Yang enlisted. According to YG Entertainment, Daesung had always wanted to enlist at the same time as the rest of the members, so he applied to enlist in 2017.

He completed his compulsory military service on November 10, 2019.

On April 3, 2023, R&D Company revealed that Dae Sung had signed an exclusive contract with them. They stated that through D-LABLE, a team dedicated to Dae Sung, they would provide generous support to showcase his talents in various fields, including music.

BIGBANG made their first appearance on August 19, 2006 at the 10th anniversary of the "YG Family", Daesung debuted alongside G-Dragon, TOP, Taeyang and Seungri.

The debut was quite successful, with its first single selling 40,000 copies. This album featured several well-known titles, including "La La La", "We Belong Together", and "Forever with You" featuring his colleague Park Bom. Daesung also recorded his first solo single, "Try Smile" (Hangul: 웃어본다; Romanization: Useo Bonda) for Big Bang's debut album, Since 2007.

Shortly after debuting with Big Bang, Daesung was diagnosed with a voice nodule, and for approximately a year, he developed social phobia, though thanks to the help of his partner <<<Gummy> > who had been in the same condition before, improved quite a bit. Before Big Bang's second album came out, Daesung's condition improved greatly.
