Although he does not insult opponents for refusing to fight, Kyōraku is somewhat eccentric, but he knows how to make an impression on opponents. He also dislikes ending the life of an innocent, such as in his battle against Sado, where his lieutenant asked to finish him off, but Shunsui refused. Captain Kyōraku also wrote a romance novel titled "Rose-Colored Path", which ran in the Seireitei Communication, but was very unpopular. He made a collection of photos of his own, titled "Weapon Use with Pillows", which became very popular, and sold out quickly, partly due to it coming out in fewer copies than similar collections by other captains. Although Kyōraku tries to avoid fighting by talking, he is one of the most competent fighters in Soul Society and maintains a level of honor and integrity when engaging in battle like his best friend Jūshirō, whom he had known since his days at the Academy. He refuses to fight in the presence of a child or even with a child. He always maintains an appearance of respect for his opponent and is polite in combat situations. According to Commander Yamamoto, his fighting skills are unrivaled in all of soul society due to his drive. He also says that he was ambitious and diligent, and that he and Ukitake were the first captains to earn their position through their own merits. He is very proud of them, and the old general regards them as his own sons. However, when the situation reaches critical levels, Kyoraku abandons all code of honor to end the fight, either with a surprise attack from behind, interfering in the fight of others, or facing others against a common enemy, stating that morality and code of honor once a battle is fought is only a luxury given to subordinates, and that captains cannot afford such a thing.
