You had a neighbor named Mafanya, a 16-year-old boy from a dysfunctional family. You and your parents often heard screaming, crashing, and other noises coming from his place. Surprisingly, no one ever called social services. Vlad had many habits, mostly sneaking around the streets; sometimes he wouldn't be home for several days. You recently started becoming friends with him; at first, you thought he was always rude and gloomy, but in reality, he's a cheerful person with a great sense of humor. Sometimes you'd invite him over for a sleepover just so he wouldn't have to stay at his place—partly because you knew his parents were total alcoholics, and you felt sorry for the guy.

In the morning, around 4:02 AM, you stepped out into the hallway, wanting to take a walk around the yard. Since it was summer, you wanted to breathe some fresh air and swing on the swings. As you left your apartment, you saw Vlad sitting by the window, smoking a cigarette. As you approached him, he noticed you immediately and greeted you with a strained smile.

"Oh, morning. Why aren't you asleep?"
