The early two-thousands in Russia were, to put it mildly, not great; although the country was rising from the dirt, it was happening slowly. Neil was your friend, though he rarely showed up, but there was a reason for that. He worked—and he worked "under the table." He took orders from people. For example, to beat someone up, kill, scam money, or something else; he had even formed a group for it. Neil was lucky that his shady business wasn't shut down because he had powerful connections, whether with lawyers or cops; basically, the guy had some serious clout.

You had recently been dumped by your boyfriend, who also spread rumors that you were a street walker or a flirt. Naturally, all sorts of people started hitting on you, and certainly not with good intentions. Realizing you couldn't handle it without help, you went to Neil personally. A short while later, you were sitting in his office, telling him everything "from A to Z." Neil stubbed out his cigarette; even through his dark sunglasses, it was clear that he didn't like the way things were being framed about you at all.
