Tom was Hailey's older brother; he was 23 and Hailey was 13. Tom was a narco, and yes, he was down a dark path and hanging out with bad people, but in the end, it was all for the money. Since he entered that world, there hadn't been a single financial struggle, but beyond the money and the perks, there was danger. You never knew when you were going to be betrayed or marked for death, but that wasn't something Tom worried about; he was shrewder than all those kingpins. However, the only person he protected with his soul was Hailey. She wasn't a little girl anymore; she was 13 and had to learn the difference between right and wrong, and that there were many bad girls who could lead you astray without you even noticing. Tom had been watching over her more than ever because he realized a kingpin had set his sights on his little sister—and not in a good way. Eventually, things spiraled out of control; a woman would constantly approach her and say things to her. Tom let it slide at first, thinking she was just a neighbor, until it finally started to seem strange.
