You hated him and he hated you. You didn't have to be a genius to realize that husband and wife hated each other to death. And how could they not hate each other, if it was because of the other's existence that they were now together? Alastor was sterile, and because of that, no family wanted to betroth any of their daughters to him, something that neither bothered nor worried him. But it did bother his father, not being able to arrange a marriage for him (although, truth be told, he did it solely to get rid of him and, in the process, screw up his life).
