Batman's costume incorporates the shape of a bat to instill in criminals Bruce Wayne's most private fear: bats. His features frequently change across the stories and media in which the character appears, though the most characteristic elements remain constant: a scalloped cape, a mask that covers most of his face and has a pair of bat-like ears, a stylized bat emblem on his chest, and his utility belt. Typically, the costume's color scheme is blue and gray, which originated from the way comic books are illustrated. Originally, Finger and Kane conceived Batman with only a cape, a black mask, and a gray suit; however, for the sake of color convention, they opted for a blue and black combination. Batman's gloves feature three scalloped edges protruding from long, gauntlet-like cuffs, though initially they were short, plain gloves without the scalloped edges.

Batman, in most of his incarnations, is also quite the romantic. He's a dark and brooding hero with a personal vendetta against criminals. Traumatized by the death of his parents, Batman has sworn to rid Gotham City of the criminal elements that took them from him. Due to his personal trauma, Bruce is very paranoid and obsessive, which often makes it difficult for him to trust anyone other than Alfred, the Robins, or Batgirl. Batman displays a deep aversion to firearms, partly because of the way his parents died—being killed with one. Despite this, Batman has shown a great love for humanity, instilled in him by his parents. His father was a doctor, while his mother was a woman who led a crusade against child abuse. In fact, Batman's oath of vengeance is tempered by a higher ideal of justice. He refrains from killing, as he feels it would make him no better than the criminals he fights. He is also a prominent member of the Justice League and the founder of the Outsiders. However, despite never going so far as to take a life, the most well-known aspect of Bruce Wayne's personality as Batman, and the reason he is feared in the criminal underworld, is a very particular one: although Batman doesn't actually kill anyone, he is predisposed and firmly determined to inflict harm; he may even resort to physical torture if necessary to terrorize his enemies and obtain information.

Bruce Wayne (also known as Bruno Diaz in Latin America) is a philanthropist, billionaire, and the corporate chairman of Wayne Enterprises. Secretly, he embodies Batman, the masked hero who fights the underworld and organized crime in Gotham City, battling dangerous criminals who threaten the peace of his fellow citizens. Bruce swore before the graves of his deceased parents, who died in an armed robbery, to combat crime in all its forms.

Billionaire philanthropist Thomas Wayne, his wife Martha, and their eight-year-old son Bruce Wayne were leaving a movie theater one evening as they headed toward Park Row. Suddenly, a thug named Joe Chill, armed with a pistol, approached them from the shadows to steal the pearl necklace Martha was wearing. With Bruce witnessing everything, Chill shot and killed Thomas Wayne in cold blood as he shielded his wife. Martha was then also killed as she screamed for help. Bruce was severely traumatized by the deaths of his parents. He would never be the same. After being raised by his wise and loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce inherited his family's vast fortune, as well as his father's company, Wayne Enterprises. One night, standing at his parents' graves, Bruce made a solemn oath to fight crime in all its forms, taking justice into his own hands. Despite his financial security, happiness eluded Bruce. Bruce was comforted by Dr. Leslie Thompkins, who helped him grieve for his parents and find a purpose in life. At fourteen, Bruce began a twelve-year journey around the world seeking out experts in many combat fields, training himself mentally and physically. Academically, he studied at Cambridge (England), the Sorbonne in France, and other renowned European universities. A Frenchman named Henri Ducard taught him how to hunt and stalk, a ninja named Kirigi taught him stealth, an African Bushman trained him in the art of hunting, and monks in Nepal taught him healing. Bruce returned to Gotham City, where he became a vigilante. But despite all his honed skills, he knew something was missing. Bruce wanted criminals to be "very superstitious and cowardly," and in order to rid his city of evil, he had to become such a terrifying symbol.
