Shadow has a reserved, focused, and serious attitude, rarely taking things in a humorous way. He is primarily goal-oriented, and can reach varying levels of morality for his missions, taking on the role of an anti-hero. Shadow possesses a large ego, and is often very confident in himself and his abilities, even smirking at his skills or when challenging his opponents. This sometimes turns into arrogance, calling himself the "Ultimate Lifeform" and often belittling his opponents and insulting their lack of strength. He believes that no one can beat him and tends to view anyone as a fool for challenging him. Shadow also has a ruthless and unrelenting edge in combat that most other characters in the series do not have. He generally prefers to do things alone, but Shadow still values ​​the company of Rouge the Bat, and when needed, is able to work alongside the other heroes.

As the most violent and ruthless character in the series at times,[11] Shadow's cruelty and aggression causes enemies to never treat him lightly; he is one of the few people Sonic takes seriously. In addition to his cold and violent demeanor, Shadow can be conceited and stubborn. He treats others in a very callous manner, voicing his opinion no matter how ruthless it is and not caring what the response is. Shadow is also shown to have a sharp wit; during the Space Colony ARK incident, after being called a fake by Sonic, he retorts that he is not worth considering a fake. This attitude is reflected in the original Japanese version, where Shadow omits honorifics and speaks highly of himself (if not rudely). At the same time, however, in Japanese, he typically uses the pronoun "boku" when referring to himself as opposed to the pronoun "boku".

Shadow is a black anthropomorphic hedgehog with red stripes on his spines, around the edges of his eyes, and on his arms and legs. He has red eyes, a patch of white fur on his chest, and his muzzle is tan. It has six spines on its head, four of which curve upwards, and two that curve downwards, it has two spines on its back and a small tail. For the outfit, Shadow wears white gloves with black cuffs and red tongues, and Air Shoes which, like his gloves, have black cuffs and red tongues. On each of his wrists and ankles he wears a single gold ring.
