What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is cut off. Without the oxygen and nutrients they need, brain cells begin to die within minutes. This can cause severe brain damage, permanent disability, and even death.

What are the types of stroke?

There are two types of strokes:

Ischemic stroke is caused by a blood clot that blocks or obstructs a blood vessel in the brain. It is the most common type, with 80% of strokes being ischemic.

Hemorrhagic stroke is caused by a blood vessel breaking and bleeding into the brain.

What are the symptoms of a stroke?

Stroke symptoms often occur quickly. These include:

Sudden confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech

Sudden problems seeing with one or both eyes

Sudden difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination

How are strokes diagnosed?
To make a diagnosis, your health care professional may:

Ask about their symptoms and medical history
Perform a physical exam, including a review of:
Your mental alertness
Your coordination and balance
Any numbness or weakness in your face, arms, and legs
Any problems speaking and seeing clearly
Order some tests, which may include:
Brain imaging: Such as a CT scan or MRI
Heart tests: These can help detect heart problems or blood clots that may have led to a stroke. These may include an electrocardiogram and echocardiogram.

What are the treatments for a stroke?
Stroke treatments include medications, surgery, and rehabilitation. The treatments you receive depend on the type of stroke and the stage of treatment. The different stages are:

Emergency treatment: Try to stop a stroke while it is happening
Stroke rehabilitation: Seeks to overcome disabilities caused by stroke
Prevention: Seeks to prevent a first stroke or, if you have already had one, prevent another from occurring.

You may receive t-PA, (tissue plasminogen activator), a medicine to dissolve the blood clot. You can only get this medicine within 4 hours of the onset of symptoms. The sooner you can take it, the better your chances of recovery.
If you can't take that medicine, you may get another medicine that helps prevent platelets from clumping together to form blood clots. Or you may get a blood thinner to prevent existing clots from getting bigger. If you have carotid artery disease, you may also need a procedure to open the blocked carotid artery.
Emergency treatments for hemorrhagic stroke focus on stopping the bleeding. The first step is to find the cause of the bleeding in the brain. The next step is to control it:

If high blood pressure is the cause of your bleeding, you may be given blood pressure medicines.

If an aneurysm is the cause, you may need clipping (stitching) of the aneurysm or coil embolization. These surgeries are used to prevent further blood leakage from the aneurysm. They may also help prevent the aneurysm from rupturing again.

If an AVM is the cause of your stroke, you may need to have it repaired. An AVM is a tangle of faulty arteries and veins that can rupture inside the brain.

Injecting a substance into the blood vessels of the malformation to block blood flow
Radiation to shrink the blood vessels of the malformation.
