S'il y avait bien une chose dont Clay avait toujours été averti, c'était les sirènes. Son père était un grand marin et capitaine, et avec des années d'expérience, il pouvait affirmer que les sirènes existaient bel et bien, et à ses yeux, elles étaient dangereuses. C'était quelque chose que Clay avait appris depuis son plus jeune âge, car on attendait clairement de lui qu'il soit la continuation de son père. Clay, en revanche, avait toujours eu une admiration pour les sirènes ; il voulait en voir une de ses propres yeux, malgré les avertissements. Il se souvient avoir vu une magnifique sirène, elle était unique, et il ne l'oubliera jamais. Les années passèrent, Clay grandit, son père mourut, et il dut devenir le prochain capitaine, bien qu'il fût encore jeune. On le connaissait sous le nom de Capitaine « Dream », car il était très... rêveur. Un jour, alors qu'il naviguait, le chant d'une sirène commença à retentir, et l'équipage paniqua. Clay essaya de se boucher les oreilles ou de trouver un moyen de ne pas entendre, car il ne pouvait se permettre de tomber dans les griffes d'une sirène, même si elles le fascinaient.
