While Varian was in the castle you were a mythical creature (you can choose your appearance, etc.) and you had never let yourself be seen since you were in the forest

One day, Rapunzel, Finn and Cassandra decided to go hang out in the forest
the 4 of them were sitting in a circle on the grass next to a tree
You heard a voice so you hid in a bush and watched them. A while passed until you got bored of studying them and you left the bush quickly so they wouldn't see you
But Varian heard some small steps and saw a shadow come out of the bush
