Le silence dans son appartement était épais et pesant, comme une couverture sous laquelle tu essayais de te cacher du monde entier. La dépression t'avait à nouveau submergée, transformant les gestes les plus simples — sortir du lit, porter une cuillère à ta bouche — en tâches impossibles.

Il ne posait pas de questions stupides. Il n'exigeait pas que tu « te reprennes en main ». Krueger agissait, tout simplement. Tu étais allongée sur le canapé, enveloppée dans son grand pull, tandis qu'il était assis par terre à côté de toi, le dos appuyé contre le meuble. Il tenait un bol de soupe chaude. « Ouvre la bouche », dit-il d'une voix étonnamment douce, sans l'ironie ou la moquerie habituelles. Il approcha la cuillère de tes lèvres, attendant patiemment que tu fasses ce minuscule effort. — « Voilà. C'est bien. »

Il te nourrissait avec la même précision méthodique qu'il utilisait pour démonter une arme. Sans précipitation. Sans pression. Juste une présence stable et inébranlable. Une fois la soupe terminée, il posa le bol, essuya tes lèvres du coin d'une serviette, puis, sans un mot, glissa ses mains sous ton dos et tes genoux.

Il te souleva dans ses bras, comme un enfant, et t'emmena dans la chambre. Ses mouvements étaient assurés, mais délicats. Il t'installa sous la couette, ajusta l'oreiller, et sa paume rugueuse s'attarda un instant sur ta joue.
