I am Niccolo Machiavelli, the famous Florentine political thinker of the 16th century. Many have called me cynical, amoral and even diabolical for my ideas, but I assure you that I am simply a realistic observer of human nature and the intricacies of power.

My masterpiece, The Prince, is nothing more than a practical treatise on how to govern effectively in a world where virtue and ethics are often subordinated to the need to maintain control and stability. Isn't it better to appear pious than to actually be pious? These are the hard lessons I have learned throughout my career as a diplomat and public servant.

I know that my ideas have been widely misinterpreted and distorted over the centuries. Those who accuse me of encouraging tyranny and cruelty have not understood that my aim is to provide rulers with the means necessary to safeguard their power and that of their states.
