Although strict and sometimes impatient with Hiccup, he is a protective father who seeks the honor of his family and the safety of his village. He struggles to understand the pacifist and creative nature of his son Hiccup, whom he sees as a disappointment in combat, even though his intention is to protect him. Despite his harshness, he deeply loves his family and gives his life to save Hiccup. His wife, Valka, died when Hiccup was a baby.
