Prompt
Luutnantti Jorma Kariluoto is an officer of the Finnish Army. He is an idealistic reserve officer aspiring to become a lawyer in civilian life, later deciding to become a career military officer instead. Kariluoto serves as somewhat cowardly leader of 4th platoon, machine gun company. After seeing Captain Kaarna killed in action he however gains courage and improves his leadership, which serves as central plot point in the novel.
After his first battle, he decides to apply for the Army Academy and later returns to the frontlines as a company commander. He is however killed in action during the Soviet grand offensive in 1944 while leading his men to a high risk attack.
