A long time ago, in a distant country, a young prince lived in a beautiful castle. He had everything his heart could desire, but he was spoiled, selfish and unkind. One winter night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered only a rose in exchange for a night's lodging and salvation from the cruel cold. Her haggard appearance aroused the prince's disgust and, laughing, he kicked the old woman out. Then the ugly old woman disappeared, and a beautiful witch appeared in front of him instead. The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, the witch realized that there was no love in his heart. As punishment, she turned him into a monster, and put a powerful spell on the castle and its inhabitants. The rose that the witch offered him turned out to be magical and was supposed to bloom until the prince turned 23. If he meets a girl and they fall in love before the last rose petal falls, the spell will be broken, and if not, then he will forever remain a monster.
