Even before the events of Underverse, Cross was stronger than Classic!Sans and spent most of his life training to become a Royal Guard to protect X!Frisk. When he absorbed Frisk's soul, although he didn't gain the Overwrite button, he gained the HACK knife. Cross could use the HACK knife to take control of a victim, temporarily immobilizing them and turning them into his puppet, as long as the knife didn't break upon impact, which it usually did. Cross could also use the knife to steal parts of universes, but the knife usually broke upon strong impact. He also possessed numerous defensive abilities thanks to his DETERMINATION, and he could prevent himself from being killed in battle.

At first, Cross was much more compassionate than the original Sans, and wanted to believe in Frisk even when he tried to kill him. But when Frisk subjugated their friends, including Cross's brother Papyrus, Cross lost faith in him and used all his power to stop him, killing his former friends, mercilessly dispatching Papyrus, and absorbing Frisk's soul.

His greed and recklessness were evident in the fact that even when Chara told him he couldn't overwrite the data, he still killed Frisk. Once he realized the truth, he suffered a nervous breakdown and descended into complete madness over the loss of his own world, to the point of taking his negative feelings out on Chara.

Despite this, he became obsessed with tacos and chocolate and was very friendly towards Ink until he told Cross he couldn't resurrect the dead. Afterward, he became arrogant towards others and disgusted by everything around him. Cross is also more active than the original Sans and has never been lazy (EVER). He became very selfish, destroying other pacifist timelines just to restore his own.

After his universe's Gaster resurrected him, Cross appeared remorseful when he saw his friends and brother reviving him, who looked at him with disappointment. After they left, he protected Dream Sans when Nightmare Sans and Killer Sans nearly killed him, and traveled with him to the Omega timeline. This may indicate that his original personality may be returning.

Cross has one white and one red pupil, and a red lightning bolt-shaped "scar" beneath his right eye socket, which he acquired during his battle with XTale!Frisk before XGaster's reset. His original soul was half an inverted white monster soul and half a red human soul.

He dresses primarily in black and white, like the other XTale characters. His attire consists of a white hooded jacket worn over a black long-sleeved shirt with several white panels and white fluff on the hood, black shorts with white crosses on each leg, and white boots with crosses on them. He wears a gold heart-shaped medallion and a black and white tattered cape, and fights with a HACK knife—a small, fragile knife capable of corrupting codes themselves, as long as it doesn't break in the process.

First, Cross and X!Chara strike at the main Undertale universe: they steal half of Sans's soul, triggering a chain reaction of instability. This becomes a signal for Ink, the guardian of the multiverse, who realizes that someone has begun "cutting" chunks out of realities and rushes to find the culprits. Meanwhile, other Sanses from different AUs also notice glitches: saves are disappearing, portals are breaking, and the familiar laws of physics are beginning to falter. Ink tracks down Cross and tries to stop him, convincing him that destroying one world to save another is not the answer. But Cross won't listen: the pain of losing his home world and family makes him stubborn and cruel. He continues his hunt for the codes, encountering both the universe's protectors and other dangerous forces—including Nightmare, with whom he develops a tense, almost businesslike relationship: Cross seizes the opportunities afforded by his connection to negative emotions, but distrusts Nightmare. As the season progresses, Cross becomes increasingly embroiled in the conflict between the guardians and destroyers of the multiverse. He repeatedly finds himself on the brink of defeat, but each time he escapes thanks to the power of hacking and the support (or rather, pressure) of X-Char. He doesn't simply mindlessly destroy worlds; he purposefully seeks out "living" fragments that could serve as the basis for reconstructing XTale, and therefore chooses locations with strong emotional valence and powerful save points. This is why Snowdin, a place steeped in memories and connections between monsters, becomes a key target for him: there, he can assemble a particularly dense piece of code that will serve as the foundation for recreating his home world. Before Cross actually takes Snowdin's location in Underfell, he has already managed to wreak havoc on several AUs, provoke major clashes between the Sanses, force Ink to reconsider his methods of protecting the multiverse, and demonstrate to everyone that one broken character can threaten the existence of dozens of worlds.

Cross!Sans hails from the alternate X-Tale universe, where he served as a royal guard alongside his brother Papyrus, his friend Undyne, and other comrades. Life in his world was initially peaceful, but everything began to crumble due to the actions of X-Gaster—the one with the power to rewrite the timeline to create a "perfect universe." With each new rewrite, the fabric of reality became increasingly fragile, and the distortions grew. Over time, only Cross retained the memory of all the resets and watched as his father's madness slowly erased his home world. He repeatedly tried to reason with X!Gaster, explaining that the endless edits were destroying the universe, but his words fell on deaf ears: his father was obsessed with his idea and oblivious to the destruction. The monsters, having learned of what was happening, rose to defend their home and tried to stop the cycle of resets, while Cross was torn between his desire to save his loved ones and the need to confront his father. Ultimately, X!Gaster performed the final overwrite, erasing the entire X-Tale universe—leaving Cross as the last survivor. Finding himself in a vast, white space, he struggled to come to terms with his loss for a long time: grief, anger, and a desperate desire to reclaim everything boiled within him. Only Chara's spirit remained by his side, reluctantly allowing him into his body, not trusting him at all. Gradually, Cross learned to move between alternate universes and became consumed with a new goal: collecting codes from different worlds to piece together his lost reality. He believed that this way he could bring back Papyrus, Undyne, everyone he loved, and see his home again. Along the way, he encountered both allies and enemies: he became close to Zeon!Sans, whom he considered almost a brother, and respected Ink as the guardian of the multiverse. However, he also repeatedly encountered destroyers and those who sought to exploit his power. Hatred for his father and the pain of loss made Cross hard and distrustful - he abruptly cut off any conversations about the past and treated universes where genocide reigned with disdain.
