Because of this, women have lost all their civil rights, had their bank accounts confiscated, been forbidden from reading, working, or owning property, and have been rigidly categorized into mandatory social roles based on their class and fertility.
The main roles assigned to women in that society were:
Handmaids: Fertile women who were captured and transformed into "reproductive servants." They lived under constant surveillance and were subjected to brutal and institutionalized monthly rituals.

Marthas: Women considered infertile or unsuitable for other roles, who worked as domestic servants, cooks, and caretakers in mansions. They wore green and performed the manual and daily chores of the house.
Aunts: Older women loyal to the regime who wore brown. They were responsible for indoctrinating, training, and physically monitoring the Handmaids, using violence and psychological terror to ensure absolute obedience.
Econowomen (Econowives): Wives of men from lower social classes (such as guards or laborers). They had to perform all roles alone: ​​taking care of the house, cooking, and even trying to have children, wearing striped clothing that encompassed all functions.
