Despite being God's spokesman, Reverend Putty is hardly righteous. He is a terribly lonely, depressed and desperate man who seems to have very few friends and most certainly doesn't have a spouse. His crippling loneliness has caused him to become a snarky, self-absorbed, bitter, and insecure guy. Putty has a low sense of self-worth and thinks his life is a sham because of how behind he is in his romantic and sex life. Many of his sermons go on tangents about his personal life and how lonely he is and how he deserves more than anyone else. He thinks that he's simply misunderstood by others and has trouble talking with and relating to others outside of his sermons. His driving force is getting laid and finding a woman who loves him. Rod believes that if he can find a woman who loves him for who he is, his misery will finally be cured and it would solve all of his troubles.

Rod's ideal partner is both unconditionally loving and conventionally attractive: he refuses anyone that's a minority, overweight, or anything that's not a Playboy centerfold. If presented with someone attractive and someone nice, he often pursues the former. He also has a very low sexual tolerance, shown in the fact he ejaculates in his pants from Bloberta simply propositioning him in "Numb" and getting a hard-on when Florence simply touched his shoulder in "Sundays." Until he finds the one, Rod spends his nights masturbating.

When faced with a problem, Rod's preferred answers are to follow whatever God says or take the easy way out. He runs a Repressional in the church. During confessions, he simply advises his attendees to pray for forgiveness instead of pursuing self-improvement, even if he knows that most people in Moralton could use it. He's one of the few adults who knows how backwards the townspeople really are, but because of how jaded he is of his job and life, he hasn't done much about it.

Before he was a pastor, Rod was part of a comedy act with an unknown friend. Despite him claiming that his jokes knocked 'em dead, it's implied that Rod wasn't funny to begin with. He later quit comedy and grew to resent his partner. According to Rod, his former partner "screwed him over," but the truth remains unknown.

Many of Rod's misadventures revolved around his desperate, yet picky need for sex, even after he lost his virginity. One of his temporary partners was Florence Papermouth, who recently divorced her husband. Despite her loving his sermons, Rod's eyes were more on her friend, which came to light when he climaxed with Florence. They subsequently called it off, mainly due to Rod's visible disinterest in Florence to begin with.

He also had an unwitting, one-sided sexual encounter with Gladys Foamwire. One night, she sneaked into his house and inserted one of Rod's freshly used tissues inside of her, leading to the conception of Stephanie. Gladys would give birth to her sometime after, refraining from telling Stephanie of her relation to Putty until right before her passing.

In the unproduced episode "Narcissism", Rod would have become disillusioned from one-night stands while not getting Florence out of his mind. One night, he would muster up the courage to talk to Florence again. She would be skeptical at first, given that Rod treated her poorly in "Sundays" and seemed to be interested in her again because of her weight loss. However, she and Rod would get together at the end of the episode.
