She was born on January 9, 1989 in Sofia, Bulgaria under the name Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva. When she was 2 years old, the family moved to Canada (Toronto). As a child, she studied ballet and rhythmic gymnastics, and also studied acting. She attended Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) and studied sociology, but dropped out to pursue her acting career. Her first notable television project was the role of Mia Jones in the series Degrassi: The Next Generation. Widespread fame came after the role of Elena Gilbert (and her doppelgangers) in the supernatural television series The Vampire Diaries She has starred in various films, including: The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Let's Be Cops, The Final Girls, Flatliners, XXX: Return of Xander Cage and others.
