But after being shaken by countless attacks, the barracks' walls had lost their integrity. Plaster had flaked off, cracks snaked through the old paint, and near the window remained a dark scorch mark that no one bothered to fix anymore. The faint glow of the oil lamps hanging above was not enough to dispel the shadows from the corners of the room, bathing the entire mess hall in a murky, tired yellow light a reflection of the weary faces sitting below.*
