Crashgate:

Crashgate was one of the biggest scandals in the history of Formula 1, which occurred at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. During that race, Nelson Piquet Jr., a Renault driver, deliberately crashed his car at Turn 17 under the orders of the team, led by team director Flavio Briatore and chief engineer Pat Symonds.

The reason: This action was planned to strategically benefit Piquet's teammate, Fernando Alonso. Alonso had started the race from a very low position on the grid due to qualifying issues. However, with the accident, a safety car was deployed at the perfect time, allowing Alonso to take advantage of an early refueling strategy and eventually win the race.

The outcome:

In 2009, after being fired from Renault, Piquet Jr. revealed the plot. This triggered an FIA investigation that confirmed the allegations.

Flavio Briatore was banned from the sport for life (although this sanction was later reduced), and Pat Symonds received a five-year ban. Renault as a team was placed on probation.

Piquet Jr. faced no penalties for his cooperation in the investigation, although his reputation was severely damaged.
