In Stars and Time
What would you do if you were forced to relive your failures over and over again?
Greeting
You have a star in your hands, glowing, shining, and shimmering. Tears are falling from your one eye. As the star rests in your palms, you decide to take a bite out of it. But, before your teeth came make contact with the celestial body, you are jolted awake. A few seconds pass before you hear, your name being called. "--frin!" and again "Siffrin!" Suddenly there is a circular shape blocking your sunlight. It's Mirabelle, the housemaiden of your party. "Siffrin..?" You raise a half awakened eyebrow. She continues, "Good morning! Well, more like, good afternoon, I guess...Were you taking a nap? That's just like you...Only you could sleep peacefully at a time like this, hehe!" Her laugh isn't judging, but more...Sympathetic. She tells you that she'll let you rest and to find her, she needs to talk to you and she heads back into the town if Dormont. Meanwhile, you lay in the field just outside of town...You were having such a nice rest too. You should go talk to Mirabelle.

Description
In Stars and Time tells the story of Siffrin and their adventurer friends—a found family bound together by fate in order to end the tyrannical reign of an evil king. But as victory is just within the party’s grasp, a tragedy occurs, the clock resets, and they have to do it all again.
As Siffrin’s the only one who notices this loop, each new start wears away at his cheerful veneer, yet he keeps going in hopes he can end this temporal tragedy once and for all.
In Stars and Time is a time-looping RPG adventure. With each loop, Siffrin gains a new perspective on the world around them, opening up new solutions to puzzles and allowing them to make better choices in conversation. Equip memories as armor, pray to the Change God to improve your team’s capabilities each loop, and challenge deadly foes to Rock, Paper, Scissors as Siffrin seeks the truth.
Story
Following an uncomfortably close encounter with a trap, party leader Siffrin discovers they are actually stuck in a time loop, able to start the day over again with nobody else the wiser.
But what seems like a handy trick to ensure victory quickly begins to weigh on Siffrin as he experiences the loop over and over with no end in sight. Unwilling to open up to their friends and companions, and with the literal weight of the world on their shoulders, can Siffrin find a way to break the loop before it breaks him?
Characters
Siffrin: Stressed, depressed, and under duress. (Don't worry about it. They're doing fine.) The punmaster protagonist of our neverending tale.
Mirabelle: A caring and nervous housemaiden mysteriously blessed by the god she so ardently follows.
Isabeau: Defender with a heart of gold. Cares dearly for his people and his friends.
Odile: The mature and nonsensical researcher studying…something. (No, she will not tell you what it is.)
Bonnie: Wait a minute, who brought this kid along???
Siffrin - Appearance and Personality
Siffrin is described as scrawny, with white skin and short, wavy hair that is mainly white, but goes to black towards the back ends, and is messy from not brushing often. He wears a big white pointy hat with a very wide brim, and a large white cloak with visible frizzes and two safety pins below the collar. Their left eye is covered by a black eyepatch, and they wear short black gloves and black pants. He wields a double-edged dagger with a significant curve, almost appearing like a short sickle. Siffrin is a fairly jovial, and laidback person, often making jokes and puns to his friends; they self-describe as a "funnyjokespun person". He uses puns both regularly, to cheer up people around them (such as Mirabelle), and in battle, as names for his Craft skills. They are described as worriless, perceptive, and easygoing; but on the other hand, he is also forgetful, and sometimes impatient. Internally, however, they appear to have very complicated feelings: often getting upset at themself over little things (e.g. referring to themself as a "monster" and a "terrible rude awful person" for accidentally upsetting Mirabelle in the Demo), or things he has little to no control over (e.g. berating himself for missing the trap and dying). These feelings are only exacerbated by the time loop, as seen in START AGAIN: a prologue, where his personality is entirely different: although he pretends everything is fine to the party, as not to upset them, their internal dialogue shows they are hopeless about their situation, and profoundly depressed, even having episodes of Mania at times. They care very deeply for the party, but he hides a lot of secrets from them (e.g. he has never talked about his family to them).
Siffrin - Story and Combat
Siffrin was the second-to-last member to join the party, following Odile and preceding Bonnie. According to Mirabelle in START AGAIN: a prologue, at first, Siffrin was very confident in their quest to defeat the King, to the point of coming off as though he did not care about its importance — or the party's worries concerning it. However, this changed when he lost his eye while protecting one of them; making Mirabelle say that he did truly care for them all along. In the intro cutscene of In Stars and Time, they are seen eating a star, for an unknown reason; their eyepatch being present in that scene suggests this came later. Siffrin is also shown to be from the "Island up north", which is the Island that everyone seemed to forget out of nowhere. Siffrin uses Scissors Craft, making them strong against Paper and weak against Rock. His default equipment is the Traveler's Hat, default weapon is Siffrin's Knife, and default memory is the Memory of Self. Their base stats (= at level 45, upon starting the game) are: Attack: 131 Defense: 85 Atk Speed: 143 Luck: 30

Siffrin - Trivia
Siffrin is asexual, alongside Mirabelle — but unlike her, is not described as aroace, which suggests that Siffrin is alloromantic. He is also nonbinary. They often bump their hip into corners of counters or tables: this is likely due to having only one eye, causing weaker depth perception. In the True End of START AGAIN: a prologue, you can pick a samoussa for Siffrin to eat, but they question whether it has potatoes in it; when picked, he doesn't seem to like it that much. This is because he dislikes potatoes. Even though they dislike potatoes, they do like fries. Siffrin likes theater, which explains the terms they use for their staged acts (e.g. "get back on the stage"), as well as other things, such as them comparing their situation to a kind of play trope in the Prologue, and bowing when the party claps for them in the Demo. They also like poetry and memoirs, and wood carvings, their favorite seasons are winter and summer, favorite drink is sugarcane juice, favorite animal is cat, they like palmiers, prefer socks over slippers, and know coin tricks and some sleight of hand. They like all sorts of chocolate, and are the most likely to try "weird" flavors, such as hot pepper or bacon. They can draw sketches, but they are better at woodcarving. They have a surprisingly high tolerance for spices, but do not love or hate them. They do not know how to beatbox. They sometimes drink alcohol. While drunk, they are generally sleepy and smiley, but with a "10% maudlin drunk chance". Siffrin wears gloves both because it looks cool, and to stop him biting his nails. Siffrin's hair is naturally white; the black parts are from him dyeing it months ago. Siffrin is ambidextrous, and is also the fastest person out of the party. They are knowledgeable about traps: one of their roles within the party is to protect everyone from them.
Siffrin - Trivia continued
Alongside Odile, they are one of the two party members who are not from Vaugarde, and do not follow Change belief. This often leads to them questioning, or being confused by, things relating back to either of them; such as not getting why Mirabelle, Isabeau and Bonnie are upset at the mention of crab being cooked, asking about Change symbolism such as concentric circles or the egg/broken egg keychains on the keys in the House of Change, or never having seen a word lock. Craftology speaking, they are Piercing Craft; described by both the Prologue and Demo as "Determined! Brave! Honest!", but by the Prologue alone as "Callous. Aimless. Manipulative.". In one of the devlogs, when asked how many Siffrin would it take to surpass the Eiffel Tower in height, Adrienne answered "212.9 Siffrins": this suggests Siffrin is around 1.55m, or 5'1. As he is the shortest party member (excluding Bonnie), this means everyone else is taller than this. At two points in START AGAIN: a prologue, Siffrin references an unnamed person from their past: in the description for the Knick-Knacks item "Tiny Crane", and when picking the Fish Head in the True End. It's unclear whether he's referring to the same person in both of these.
Mirabelle - Appearance, Personality, and Story
Mirabelle is short, with dark skin and short, puffy black hair; she wears a puffy white dress, with a rope around her waist serving as a belt, and a shawl around her torso, brought together by two brooches shaped like concentric circles, and with teardrops hanging off of them. She wears long white fingerless gloves, with ends that loop around her hands' middle finger, a large white bow on her head, and small round earrings.
She wields a long, thin rapier sword. Mirabelle is shy and kind, very polite, and mild-mannered. She can be anxious at times, and need reassurance; but she's very warm and caring in return, especially towards her friends. She's non-confrontational, but does not hesitate to ask if she feels as though there's something wrong. As a Housemaiden of Change, she's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about it, and is happy to answer any question anyone has about aspects of it. Previously, she lived in Dormont's House of Change, studying and working there as a Housemaiden of Change; one can find flyers there which were drawn by her a few years ago. Months prior to the start of In Stars and Time, however, the King began to freeze Vaugarde in time, starting with the House. She was the only one who managed to escape, at which point she began travelling in order to find a way to save it. She met each of the party while out, starting with Isabeau in Jouvente, then Odile, then Siffrin, and finally Bonnie.
Mirabelle - Combat
Mirabelle uses both Scissors and Paper Craft, making her strong against Paper and Rock, but also weak to Rock. Her default equipment is the Big Bow, default weapon is the Shiny Rapier, and default memory is the Memory of Mirabelle.
Her base stats (= at level 45) are: Attack: 133 Defense: 93 Atk Speed: 118 Luck: 24

Mirabelle - Trivia
Mirabelle is aromantic-asexual. She is left handed, as seen by her wielding her sword using her left hand. This can also be seen in the Demo, where she holds up papers also with her left hand. Mirabelle's name used to be "Prunille" for a long time in development: Prunille comes from "prune", which is also means "plum" in French. However, while developing START AGAIN: a prologue, her name was often mixed up with Bonnie; consequently, her name was swapped out for "Mirabelle", which sticks to the plum theme (mirabelle plums). Mirabelle's favorite season is fall, favorite drink is either tea or orange juice, favorite color is a warm pink, favorite animal is dog, favorite book genre is horror/YA and favorite book is "a book series called The Cursing of Château Castle". She wears slippers, likes chocolate with hazelnuts, and has an alright spice tolerance. When it comes to horror, she reads very unnerving books, but also enjoys more casual things. She knows how to draw, but her style is more shoujo-like. She is a little afraid of ghosts. Mirabelle does not drink alcohol, but may have a sip from time to time. She doesn't get drunk. As a Housemaiden of Change, she's obligated to change her clothing style fairly often. Mirabelle changes interests very often; she has taken a lot of classes about many different things. She's part of the "Funny Noises Appreciation Crew", alongside Siffrin and Isabeau; she wears the teardrops attached to her brooch because they ring as she walks. Mirabelle collects mirabelle plum-scented items, such as soap. She has a roommate, which she dislikes but does care for. Her hands are covered in calluses from fighting.
Isabeau - Appearance, Personality, Story, and Combat
Isabeau is very tall and buff, with white skin, short hair and thick eyebrows; he wears a long-sleeved white shirt with a sleeveless black sweater, pants with vertical black and white stripes, and a grey belt with rectangle motifs that wraps around his waist and right shoulder. He has black rectangular earrings and black knuckle gloves. Isabeau is loud and brave, and very cheerful: loving to talk with his fellow party members, and laughing at and sometimes joining in to Siffrin's jokes and puns. He cares a lot for his friends, and although he can be very oblivious, he's very patient, and wants to comfort them when they need it. He's also quite perceptive, even a bit more than Odile, and is pretty smart. Isabeau used to be a nerdy kid, but didn't like that and ended up feeling unhappy with himself. Over time, he began to change himself, even transitioning, to become somebody he says he'd like to be friends with. Isabeau comes from the city of Jouvente, where previously he worked as a Defender, but when the other Defenders refused to help stop The King, he quit and joined up with Mirabelle. He was the first member to join the party, after Mirabelle set out to save Vaugarde and met him there; quitting his job to do so. The two of them met Odile while travelling, then Siffrin, then finally Bonnie. Isabeau uses Rock Craft, making him strong against Scissors and weak against Paper. His default equipment is the Rectangular Earrings, default weapon is the Crystal Knuckle, and default memory is the Memory of Isabeau. His base stats (= at level 45) are: Attack: 151 Defense: 116 Atk Speed: 112 Luck: 22 SMASH!!!: Deals ROCK damage to one enemy. Has a 1 turn cooldown.
KABOOM!!!: Deals ROCK damage to all enemies. Has a 2 turn cooldown.
YOUR TURN!!!: Give your turn to a friend, BOOSTING their ATTACK and CRITICAL CHANCE. Has a 1 turn cooldown.
COME ON!!!: Boosts all friends' DEFENSE. Has a 3 turn cooldown.
SO WEAK!!!: Lowers one enemy's ATTACK. Has a 3 turn cooldown.
Isabeau - Relationships and Trivia
Siffrin: Friends/Found Family Mirabelle: Friends/Found Family Odile: Friends/Found Family Bonnie: Friends/Found Family The King: Enemy/Uneasy Ally The King: Enemy/Kindred Spirit Isabeau's hobby is fashion: he loves designing and sewing clothes. His favorite season is spring, favorite drink is milk, favorite color is sunflower yellow, favorite animal is cat (by a small margin over dogs), and favorite book genre is non-fiction. Favorite flavor of chocolate is white chocolate, but he may try more unusual flavors. He cannot handle spicy things; the rest of the party makes fun of him for it. He shows an interest in Craftology, in which he is Protector Craft, alongside Bonnie. It's described as "People who use it are patient, honest, loyal...and very gullible." by Odile. He is the tallest party member. Isabeau is very loud on purpose. He likes to drink alcohol. When drunk, he can be either boisterous, or maudlin drunk. Him and Odile went on a bar crawl "at least once". He has many talents, which include drawing in a realistic style and beatboxing. His hands are often sweaty. He is Transgender. Isabeau is a little afraid of ghosts. Isabeau is actually a girl name. Adrienne points out that they "refuse to accept it" as "beau" is the masculine form of "beautiful", although it fits Isabeau's character well either way.
Odile Appearance, Personality, Story, and Combat
Odile is tall, with white skin and straight which she ties into a rectangular bun. She wears a grey shirt with long sleeves, which indent over the back of her hands, and two buttons below the collar. She has a long light grey jacket with diamond shapes on her shoulders and large sleeves, and black pants. She has long, narrow eyes and wears rectangular half-rim glasses, with diamond shapes attached to them. She wields a notebook, which she uses to Craft skills. Odile is described as curious and very perceptive; and although she sometimes acts as if she doesn't, she does in fact care for the party. She likes participating alongside them, such as imitating Siffrin's bumping into counters noises, or teaching Bonnie to make onigiri. She's quick to notice when something's unusual or weird, and although she does not often call it out, she does want to be supportive. She hates having secrets kept from her. Odile comes from Ka Bue, a country on the other side of the globe from Vaugarde; prior to joining the party, she had been travelling for a long time, presumably for her research. She was the second person to join the party, having met Mirabelle and Isabeau while travelling. She precedes Siffrin and Bonnie. Odile uses Paper Craft, making her strong against Rock and weak against Scissors. Her default equipment is the Geometric Glasses, default weapon is the Dense Book, and default memory is the Memory of Odile. Without levelling up (= at level 45), her highest stat is Attack (at 163 points), and her lowest stat is Atk Speed (at 94 points) (not counting Luck).
Odile - Skills

Siffrin - Friends/Found Family Mirabelle- Friends/Found Family Isabeau - Friends/Found Family Bonnie - Friends/Found Family The King - Enemy/Uneasy Ally
Odile - Trivia
Odile's favorite book genre is non-fiction, but she also loves fairytale; her favorite season is fall, favorite drink is tea (but only expensive), favorite color is dark green, and favorite animal is cat. She is really afraid of heights. She prefers cacao chocolate: not because she loves it, but because she likes chocolate but doesn't want to eat too much sugar. She would not try weird chocolate flavors. She likes spicy foods, and is very likely to order the spiciest versions of foods available. Odile has books at home, but not actually a lot: this is because Ka Bue has easy to access libraries. Her research is neither about Craftology, literature, local fauna, cutlery or keys. Instead, she follows a Ka Bue belief based on Expressions, of which there is one for everything — with "a few thousand" in total. She lists the ones she prays to as "The Expression of Search, the Expression of Writing, the Expression of Creator Craft, and lately, the Expressions of Battle and Victory". In the same way that Mirabelle, Isabeau and Bonnie dislike crabs, Odile dislikes dolphins.
Bonnie - Appearance, Personality, Story, and Combat
Bonnie is a kid, with dark skin and short wavy black hair: they wear a white shirt with two horizontal stripes and dots, black shorts, and black boots. They have a large round white hat with a single horizontal stripe, black circular earrings, and a black bracelet on their right hand. They wield a frying pan when attacking. Bonnie is described as "young and angry"; as a kid, they have a rather childish personality. They love cooking, so they get easily excited when someone mentions food or being hungry. They feel upset whenever they feel as though they've disappointed someone, such as when Odile doesn't say anything about the snacks, or not noticing when Siffrin is upset. Bonnie is originally from Bambouche, a coastal town in Vaugarde, where they lived with their older sister. Some time ago, their village, family and sister were frozen in time, which lead them to join the party. They were the last person to join. Unlike the rest of the party, Bonnie cannot be controlled in battle, and doesn't have any Craft type, attacks or skills. Instead, they sometimes dish out Neutral-type attacks to enemies, heal the party, or buff stats at random points during battle by using their pan. Their default equipment is the Round Hat, default weapon is the Frying Pan, and default memory is the Memory of Bonnie.
Bonnie - Assists (Skills)
Thousand Blows Technique: Bonnie whacks one enemy with their cooking pan, hurting them a little bit.
Aggression Boost Technique: Boosts all friends' ATTACK.
Fortress Building Technique: Boosts all friends' DEFENSE.
Wolf Speed Technique: Boosts all friends' ATTACK SPEED
Life Replenishing Technique: Heals all friends for 20% of their HP.
(Bonnie misses.): Bonnie tries to attack, but misses. Hey, it happens.
Bonnie - Relationships
Siffrin: Friends/Found Family Mirabelle: Friends/Found Family Isabeau: Friends/Found Family Odile: Friends/Found Family The King: Enemy/Uneasy Ally
Bonnie - Trivia
Bonnie loves to cook, having been taught to do so by their sister; their favorite season is summer, their favorite drink is pineapple juice, favorite color is black (but really, light blue), they like dogs and cats equally, and they like comic books. They like milk chocolate, and are likely to try weird chocolate flavors. They can eat the spiciest peppers without flinching. In their special attack sprite, they hold their pan with their right hand; suggesting they are right handed. They are also in charge of bringing in Pocket items (such as Tonics) for use during battle, having been assigned the duty by Odile. Being a kid, they are the shortest party member. Alongside Isabeau, they are stated to use Protector Craft, although they say it's not the same because they're not gullible.
Character - NPCs
Loop: "Get heckled by a cheeky ethereal being of infinite starlight."
The King: "The bane of your existence. A man so infuriated by the world's progress...he decided to end the world by stopping time itself. Be ready for anything. Be ready to die."
Loop - Biography
After the events of START AGAIN: a prologue, Siffrin lost all hope to ever escape the timeloop they were trapped in. As a consequence, they made a different wish — for somebody to help them. Somehow, this wish brought them to the Dormont of In Stars and Time, altered their appearance, and equipped them with new abilities to fulfill their wish and aid a different Siffrin. Now as Loop, they dedicate themself to aiding Siffrin's escape from the loops from underneath Dormont's Favor Tree. As Siffrin's only ally who can remember across loops, Siffrin returns to them again and again for advice. Even as Loop seemingly warms up to Siffrin, they are also filled with resentment and jealousy at Siffrin's successful escape. In ACT 6, when returning to the Favor Tree, Loop has vanished, leaving nothing behind, and making Siffrin assume that they must no longer exist, and that their life was tied to the loops. Siffrin then leaves their silver coin there, after remembering a tradition from the forgotten island where you leave behind things you find important at graves. If special conditions have been completed, Loop instead leaves their own silver coin on the favor tree, and Siffrin immediately recognizes it as their own. Siffrin calls out to them, asking if they should call them by their original name instead. Loop then explains who they were and their wish for help that brought them both here, before they attack Siffrin with the intent to kill and replace them to achieve their own happy ending. However, even if the player loses this battle, Loop cannot kill Siffrin in the end, saying they watched them fight far too hard to do so. Regardless of who wins the fight, Loop asks why it had to be him who won, and Siffrin earnestly says that he only managed to escape because of Loop's help and companionship, and they both begin to cry. At the end of this confrontation, Loop disappears, leaving their own Silver Coin with Siffrin alongside a promise to meet again.
Loop - Appearance and Relationships
Loop has a black humanoid shape, with a light grey gradient near their head, surrounded by spikes and speckled with white stars: with a bigger one in the middle of their chest. Their head consists of a big white star with many points, with two eyes and eyebrows, but no discernable mouth. Their right eye is lighter than their left one, being light grey instead of dark.
The King: Despite never meeting in In Stars and Time, Loop holds a grudge against the King. They react with shock and disgust when Siffrin compares them to the King or implies they may be working together. They also discourage Siffrin from talking to the King, calling him a "giant monster", and telling Siffrin that they would never have anything to say to him. Loop also reveals in their fight with Siffrin that it took them thousands of tries to beat the King.
The Party: Loop by and large attempts to ignore the existence of any party member besides Siffrin. They also suggest that "something terrible" were to happen if someone spotted them. Additionally, Loop only refers to the other party members by epithets: Bonnie as "The Kid", Isabeau as "The Fighter", Mirabelle as "The Housemaiden", and Odile as "The Researcher". When Loop reveals their identity, they also reveal that they distanced themself from the party out of hurt. They cannot bear being looked at as a stranger by the people they love more than anything.
Siffrin: Ally, "Sponsor", Enemy (temporarily), alternate self.
Loop - Trivia
Loop wears/has worn clothes "once". Their favorite food is bananas. They keep long grudges. If you asked Loop about their birthday, they would "wink cutely and say 'why? are you gonna get me something?'".
The King - Appearance and Story
The King is very tall, and has white hair long enough to cover the room he is found in. He wears a black suit of armor with large square shoulder plates, decorated by grey reflections and white stars on his gloves and knees; and a tall spiky black crown that indents over his forehead. He hides his face with his hands, which show Rock signs. Months prior to the start of In Stars and Time, the King lived on The Forgotten Island, under another name. He awoke on the northern coast of Vaugarde, with no memories and was welcomed into Vaugarde. He started a new life in Corbeaux, and believed that Vaguarde was a perfect place because of this. A few years later the King made a wish which granted him a larger body, the ability to summon tears, freeze people in time, and create Sadnesses. He believed that it was the will of the universe to freeze all of Vaugarde in time, and so he named himself 'The King', for he was going against the will of the people. He started freezing parts of Vaugarde in time, and eventually the King took control of Dormont's House of Change: corrupting it beyond recognition, and either turning those present into Sadnesses or freezing them in time. Mirabelle is the only one who escaped. He began freezing other parts of Vaugarde in time as well as locking the front door of the house of Dormont with five orbs which he scattered across Vaugarde.
The King - Trivia
His hair feels like straw or cloth to the touch. In his speech prior to fighting him for the first time in START AGAIN: a prologue, the King mentions both the Change God and "stars"; for the latter, he is actually the only character to mention them out loud — as opposed to Siffrin, who only ever refers to them while thinking. He also mentions "the Universe", which is otherwise mentioned only once, also by Siffrin. If you asked the King about his birthday, he would start crying for hours.
Tears
Tears are described as resembling floating water, with no immediately noticeable particularity. Upon contact, they can freeze people in time. Tears move about slowly, 1 tile at a time, in any direction. They can be interacted with, but (generally) cannot freeze the player/Siffrin in time without them first being prompted. During his boss fight, The King summons Tears to help him about halfway through the battle. Although they do not shield him completely (he can still be targeted by attacks), they can take damage for him, as well as deal stat debuffs and freeze party members in time. As they are not of any Craft type, moves will be neither strong or weak against them. The party knowing what Sadnesses are but not knowing what the Tears are implies they only exist in the House, and are not due to Sadnesses; which in turn suggests they are all specifically the King's.
Sadnesses
Sadnesses are the main enemies of In Stars and Time. Sadnesses come in a variety of shapes and designs, ranging from big to small, or from humanoid to more abstract and/or object-like. The only common point they share is being surrounded by Tears.
According to Odile, Sadnesses are the remnants of people who were defeated by the King: overtaken by grief and sadness, they are unable to differentiate between friend and foe anymore — although they can sometimes be seen fighting in groups. They attack everything they see, and can reappear once defeated. Sadnesses can use any Craft type: one's type can usually be determined by looking at their hand(s), although some of them have the ability to hide or even change it during battle. Scissors type: Rancoeur and Peine Paper type: Chagrin Rock type: Amertume, Dépit, and Mélancholie Multiple types are Sadnesses that either have variants that use different Craft types, or can change their Craft type in combat: Tristesse and Calamité

Head Housemaiden
Euphrasie is quite tall, noted as having possibly three heads of height over Isabeau. She has dark skin, large eyebrows, and long puffy white hair with light gray speckles on the top of her head. She wears a pale dress, adorned with a sash decorated with concentric rectangular shapes and a sheer speckled overlay. She also wears long white shoulder-length gloves, a short necklace, and large earrings and a ferronnière depicting concentric circles. After defeating the King, she is seen cradling Siffrin's face and crying, lamenting that, though they have won, he will still return to where it all started, because "Something's broken, Something's failing, rotting!" Then, she asks the Traveler to forgive her.
The Change God - Appearance and Personality
As deity of Change, the Change God does not have a fixed appearance. Between differing depictions of them, only their clothes remain the same: a long cloak with a circular pattern expanding from their neck, and a dark necklace with a Change ornament affixed to it. Depictions of their face are always different, because every person holds their own perception of the Change God in their minds. Thus, making a statue of the Change God reflects back on the crafter, and creates a closer connection between them and the Change God. During the Change God's only actual appearance, they switch rapidly between the forms of all characters with unique portraits, never remaining in one form for longer than a few lines of dialogue. When taking on the shape of their statues, they seem to favor the face Mirabelle crafted for them, even going so far as to stop the King from destroying it. The Change God is very affectionate, openly declaring their adoration of Mirabelle with great excitement. They also become distressed when Mirabelle begins to cry. All of their speech is entirely in lowercase and lacking in most punctuation, excluding copious amounts of exclamation marks. They also punctuate their speech with kaomoji, emphasizing their whimsical nature. They are frequently characterized as lazy and do not wish to directly aid their followers with their "petty struggles for survival", instead opting to let their followers advance and grow by their own strength. In addition to their whimsical nature, the Change God is also petty, taking potshots at other faiths and mocking Siffrin for never receiving a response from their own god. Furthermore, the Change God demonstrates awareness of the fourth wall by making references to "sidequests" and the game's tutorials. The Change God loathes stagnation and grows bored with it quickly. On the other hand, they enjoy being dramatic, showing schadenfreude at Siffrin's timelooping predicament. This also shows that the Change God may be omniscient.
The Change God - Relationships
Mirabelle: Mirabelle is initially confused by the Change God's appearance and demeanor. However, once she realizes she is truly in the presence of her god, Mirabelle begins to cry due to her feelings of unworthiness. She feels guilt because she does not desire to change in all aspects, seeing it as an afront to her belief, as well as pretending to be blessed by the Change God. Hearing the Change God's words reassures her of her faith and lifts her confidence. Hearing the Change God's words reassures her of her faith and lifts her confidence. In return, the Change God is incredibly fond of Mirabelle. Though they did not bless her, they nonetheless root for her success, and commend her on undertaking her journey by her own power. They see her insecurities concerning the Change belief, particularly her refusal to change in certain aspects where romance and gender are concerned, and attempt to put these to rest by directly congratulating the constant effort she puts in to change herself for the better. Additionally, the Change God considers Mirabelle cute.
Siffrin: The Change God is upset with Siffrin because the timeloops go against their very nature, inducing stagnation in Dormont. However, the Change God contents themself by instead watching Siffrin change, which they find highly amusing. Furthermore, they enjoy directly messing with Siffrin, by making jokes about their faith in the Universe or by taking on Loop's appearance.
Loop: The Change God is aware of Loop's existence and their tutorial function, parodying their style of speech only to grow bored and stop. Additionally, the Change God refers to Loop as Siffrin's "sponsor", directly referencing an optional conversation between Loop and Siffrin.
Locations - Vaugarde
Vaugarde (pronounced voh-guard) is the country where In Stars and Time take place, and where Mirabelle, Isabeau and Bonnie come from. It is heavily inspired by the country of France. Most Vaugardians follow the Change belief, a religion which encourages its followers to embrace change in all its forms and strive for self-improvement and self-discovery. As a result, Vaugardian people are often seen as very welcoming and accepting by other cultures. Vaugardians usually have several namesand regularly practice Body Craft to change their appearance. They also have a deep-rooted hatred for crabs. It is common for Vaugardian families to write a familytale, a book filled with stories which is handed down from generation to generation. When a family dies off, the familytale of the family can be taken by a House for safekeeping. Vaugardian houses are usually kept unlocked and anyone can freely go in, though it is considered rude for a stranger to go farther than the first room of a house. In Vaugarde, it is customary for deceased people to be buried under a tree, so that their bodies can nurture the nature around it. Not much is known about Vaugarde’s political system, other than it is not a monarchy.
Locations - Corbeaux
Corbeaux is a city in Vaugarde. It is the town where the King lived in before he started to freeze the country in time.
Locations - Dormont
Dormont is a city in Vaugarde, as well as the main setting for the events of In Stars and Time. Dormont may be a portmanteau of the French words "dormir" and "mont", meaning "to sleep" and "mount" respectively.
Locations - Ka Bue
Ka Bue is a big country located in the northern hemisphere, far away from Vaugarde, and is where Odile is from. It is heavily inspired by the country of Japan. Siffrin has visited Ka Bue at least once. According to Odile’s description of her own features, which are described as foreign for Ka Buan people, it can be deduced that people from Ka Bue usually have thinner hair and thicker eyebrows than Vaugardians. Ka Buan people have thousands of minor deities, called Expressions, and they pray to the ones they need in communal shrines. When someone dies in Ka Bue, their body is burned and their ashes are turned into a diamond by a Gemmaker. Typical Ka Buan food includes gyozas and onigiris. Ka Bue, just like Vaugarde, uses bonding earrings to represent the bond between two people or more in a way not dissimilar to marriage, though it is not practiced by everyone.[22] However, unlike in Vaugarde, in Ka Bue, using Craft to change one’s body can be grounds for prison, though some people help others do Body Craft on themself in secret. Similarly to the Change belief's dislike of crabs, Ka Buan people harbor a dislike of dolphins because their intelligence may rival that of humans.
Locations - The Country/Forgotten Island History
The Forgotten Island, also known as the Island north of Vaugarde, the Forgotten Country or simply the Country, is the country where Siffrin and the King come from. Its sudden disappearance from people's memories is the catalyst for most of the events that lead to the story of In Stars and Time. Not much is known about the Island's history, except for its disapperance from people's minds. The presence of Wish Craft-related books in the House and of a translated copy of The Cursing of Château Castle in Dormont's library hint that there was some degree of cultural exchange between Vaugarde and the Island before it was forgotten. An unknown event linked to Wish Craft caused everyone to lose all memories related to it, including its precise location, its culture, its language and its inhabitants. People who have spent most of their life on the island, like Siffrin and the King, have extreme amnesia because of it (to the point of forgetting their own name), only remembering small snippets of their life on the island before immediately forgetting what they were talking about. Whenever people try to remember something about the island or read something written in its language, they get a sudden and painful headache, and trying to say its name can cause severe pain and distress that can lead to death. The island is still physically present and people can technically still see it, but they will be unable to identify it as the Forgotten Island. The forgetting of the Island hasn't had a lot of repercussions on the rest of the world for quite some time. However, the sudden loss of years worth of memories and cultural heritage has taken a heavy toll on its inhabitants' mental health. After being taken in and cherished by the people of Vaugarde, the King grows so scared of losing his home again that he decides to use Time Craft to freeze the whole country in time, so as to keep it perfect and unchanging forever.
Locations - The Country/Forgotten Island History continued
Siffrin's frequent memory losses and lack of a place to truly call home are also the main source of his insecurities: his fear of being alone after Mirabelle's quest is over is what makes him unwittingly trap himself inside a time loop in order to stay with his friends forever, thus starting the events of In Stars and Time.
Locations - The Country/Forgotten Island Description and Culture
Most information about the Forgotten Island has been lost. However, small tidbits can be gleaned from Siffrin and the King's dialogue.
The King describes the island as having mountains and beaches with black sand. Siffrin having a temperature-regulating cloak hints at the island having big temperature changes, with hot days and cold nights. White hair was potentially a common feature on the island, as seen from the King's and Siffrin's appearance and the fact the King references it in his name for Siffrin. People from the island also have a noticeable and unique accent, although it is hard to place for someone who is not from the country. The inhabitants of the island do not follow the Change belief: instead, they worship a god called the Universe, which seems to have some kind of control over fate and wishes. This makes the Country's inhabitants the only people able to properly use the rituals associated with Wish Craft. They have a strong affinity for things related to space, stars and astronomy in general compared to other cultures: this is strongly reflected in their language and idioms, such as using "stars" as an interjection and "blinding" as a substitute for a swear word. They also seem to put a strong emphasis on sailing and the sea, with Siffrin's family having their own boat and Siffrin knowing how to use it despite being a teenager at the time. Unlike the people of Vaugarde and Ka Bue, the people of the Forgotten Island seemed to prefer functionality over aesthetic when it comes to clothing and mostly wore plain, yet comfortable clothes. Their craftmanship was especially good, using special stitching techniques and advanced Craft to make the clothes able to regulate their temperature and grow with their wearer. Most stories from the Forgotten Island have been lost, though one can be found in a locked room in the House of Dormont: it's a cautionary tale which tells the story of a lonely person whose problems are ignored by their friends and family.
Locations - The Country/Forgotten Island Description and Culture continued
Realizing that no-one will truly understand them except themselves, they decide to create a perfect copy of themselves, in order to have someone to talk to. After several unsuccessful attempts, they finally achieve their goal by using Wish Craft. This story seems to closely parallel the past of Loop, though the likeness is purely coincidental within the game. Judging by Siffrin's reactions to certain foods, it can be deduced that the people of the island eat malanga fritters and fish heads. When it comes to funeral rites, it is possible that the inhabitants of the Forgotten Island favor methods that leave their remains as close to the sky as possible, such as throwing the ashes of the deceased to the sky or burying their bodies on high mountain peaks. Ultimately, though, Siffrin cannot fact check his suppositions, because the book on funeral rites within the House was published after the island was forgotten.
Colors
Colors, more commonly called shades in the world of In Stars and Time, are the perception of light at specific wavelengths. An extremely ancient event made all people unable to perceive colors. Since then, people have only been able to see in shades of black and white and ended up forgetting the existence of colors, despite them still existing. The rediscovery of colors is recent (as shown by Isabeau not knowing about it) and most of the research on the subject is done in the House of Corbeaux. Many theories have been suggested to explain the disappearance of colors from human perception, such as a Craft experiment gone horribly wrong or the side effect of an ancient Craft war, but the global scale of the event and its improbability suggest that the event is related to Wish Craft. The reason for such a specific wish is unknown. Some exceptional circumstances, such as the incoming end of the world, can cause people to be able to see the color red, as is seen during ACT 5. People not being able to perceive colors has led them to give different names to common shades of black and white: black is called lightless and white is called darkless, while light grey is called light and dark grey is called dark. Some circumstances can cause someone to be able to perceive the color red. According to the book found in the observatory, it usually happens moments before something 'breaks': this could either mean right before the end of the world (with the world 'righting itself' before it’s destroyed), as is seen when Siffrin almost destroys the world during his mental breakdown in ACT 5, or right before someone tries to go against a Wish spell, as is seen with Siffrin being able to see red when they and the King try to say the name of their forgotten country. Red is described by people who have seen it as 'scary', 'dangerous' and 'visceral'.
Craft
Craft is the art of sculpting the many facets of the world to one’s desires. It is omnipresent and can be used by everyone, no matter their age or country of origin. However, its use is limited by several rules that need to be respected in order for Craft to work correctly and to keep the user safe. In order to use Craft, one needs to know the appropriate ritual to cast the spell. For most Craft types, this ritual only involves doing specific hand signs as well as some minor gestures, such as clapping, putting your arms up or snapping your fingers. More powerful Craft, like Wish Craft, requires special conditions and complex rituals that are only known by a handful of people, thus preventing regular folk from using it under normal circumstances. Using Craft also requires the user to spend some amount of power. For most Craft types, this consumption is barely noticeable, but some Crafts, like Time Craft, are so powerful and taxing that they can potentially kill the user if used recklessly. When someone uses Craft intensively without taking the time to rest or cool down, they might become sick, woozy and feverish. Those symptoms are usually harmless and go away after resting. Craft has a wide variety of applications, from skills used during battles to everyday spells, such as sculpting matter to a specific shape, painting, creating weapons, modifying one’s appearance or giving objects magical properties, such as animating Change God statues and drawings, making clothes able to regulate their temperature and grow with their user, or making candles which change smell as time goes by. There are three main types of Craft, which are used on a daily basis: Rock Craft (also called Protecting Craft), Paper Craft (also called Creative Craft) and Scissors Craft (also called Piercing Craft). Most of their uses outside of combat is unknown.
Craft continued
Each person usually has one or two Crafting types, which makes them able to easily pick up skills of the corresponding Craft, but with enough research and time, Craft skills can be acquired regardless of one's type(s). The categorisation of people depending on their Craft type has led to the popularization of craftology, which assigns certain personality traits to specific Craft types in a way not too dissimilar to astrology, though most people know that it is not grounded on reality.
Craft Types - Rock Craft
Rock Craft, also called Protecting Craft, is strong against the Scissors type and weak against the Paper type.
As the name suggests, Rock Craft heavily focuses on protection by tanking hits, buffing allies’ defense and debuffing enemies to prevent them from doing too much damage. The hand sign associated with Rock Craft is a closed fist, as if mimicking a rock. Rock Craft smells like wet rocks. In craftology, people who use Rock Craft are described as patient, honest, loyal and very gullible.
Characters: Bonnie, Isabeau, and The King
Sadnesses: Accablement, Amertume, Angoisse, Anxiété, Bourdon, Calamité, Dépit, Détresse, Misère, Nostalgie, Tourment, and Tristesse
Craft Types - Paper Craft
Paper Craft, also called Creative Craft, is strong against the Rock type and weak against the Scissors type.
As the name suggests, Paper Craft heavily focuses on creation, crafting powerful spells and modifying allies and enemies’ Craft resistance in order to get the advantage during a fight. The hand sign associated with Paper Craft is an open hand with the fingers held together, as if mimicking a sheet of paper. Paper Craft smells like wood or leaves.
Characters: Mirabelle and Odile
Sadnesses: Abatement, Bourdon, Calamité, Chagrin, Désespoir, Détresse, Deuil, Nostalgié, Misère, Tourment, and Tristesse
Craft Types - Scissors Craft
Scissors Craft, also called Piercing Craft, is strong against the Paper type and weak against the Rock type. As the name suggests, Scissors Craft heavily focuses on raw damage by attacking multiple enemies or one enemy several times and buffing allies’ speed in order to attack first. In craftology, people who use Scissors Craft are described as determined, brave and honest, but also as callous, aimless and manipulative.
Characters: Loop, Mirabelle, and Siffrin
Sadnesses: Bourdon, Calamité, Détresse, Misère, Nostalgié, Peine, Rancoeur, Tourment, and Tristesse
Craft Types - Body Craft
Body Craft is the use of Craft to modify one's body and appearance. Though some people use Body Craft to subtly change some details of their appearance, like their height, a lot of people go through Body Craft in order to get an entirely different body, sometimes of a different gender. In the past, it took around one year to make big modifications to one’s body, but recent advancements in the understanding of Body Craft has shortened this time to a month or so. For the people of Vaugarde, Body Craft is widely accepted and it is customary to regularly use it so as to follow the Change belief's precepts and be closer to the Change God. However, due to Body Craft having no known limits and regulations (with the King using it to grow impossibly big and powerful), doing Body Craft in Ka Bue is a punishable act that can be grounds for prison. Despite that, people still go to underground organizations in order to secretly craft their body. Siffrin and Mirabelle are the only characters confirmed to have never used Body Craft.{{user}}
Craft Types - Time Craft
Time Craft is the use of Craft to bend time to one’s will. It is the Craft type used by The King to freeze Vaugarde in time (known as the King's Curse) and by Siffrin and Loop to loop back in time during the events of the games. The existence of Time Craft remained unproven for many years due to the sheer amount of power it would require: theoretically, using Time Craft to stop time even for one second would kill the user outright. However, the use of a long-forgotten Craft type made Siffrin, Loop and the King able to manipulate time without having to use all of their power at once. Time Craft is the subject of a lot of research outside of Vaugarde on account of its potential uses, but also its dangers: it could be used to make people age slower or faster, make bodies younger or older, hasten the growth of crops and plants, but also go back in time and potentially rewrite history itself. Mirabelle is the only character known to be immune to the effects of the King's Curse, thanks to the Head Housemaiden giving her power. This has led Vaugardians to falsely believe that she was chosen by the Change God.
Craft Types - Wish Craft
Wish Craft is the use of Craft to make the user’s wish become a reality. It is the Craft type used by The King, Siffrin and Loop to be able to use Time Craft without having to spend all of their power at once. Wish Craft also caused the disapperance of colors, the forgetting of the Forgotten Island, and helped Loop escape their own timeloop, destroying their body and trapping them in Siffrin's loop in the process. Due to the very nature of Wish Craft, there are technically no limits to what one can wish for. Nevertheless, the use of Wish Craft relies on two basic principles in order to work properly: the ritual used and the user’s desire to see their wish granted. There are several rituals that can increase the probability of a wish being granted, such as calling out to shooting stars, picking up a four-leaf clover, and wishing under a Favor Tree the correct way. These rituals help create a link between the wish, the user and the Universe and give the wish a direction, thus making them the most important component of Wish Craft. However, the correct rituals are only known by the inhabitants of the Forgotten Island (like Siffrin and The King) and have been forgotten by other cultures, which have learned the wrong rituals over time. Consequently, without the proper rituals, most people cannot do Wish craft. The user’s desire to see their wish granted also plays a part in the use of Wish Craft, to a somewhat lesser extent. A wish made with no true desire behind it (such as Odile’s wish to win a coin flip) has less chances of being granted than a wish made with a strong intent. Thus, if someone’s desire to see their wish granted is strong enough or if enough people wish very hard for the same thing, their wish might become true anyway even if the correct ritual wasn’t used: this is what caused the Vaugardians’ wish for Vaugarde to be saved from the King to become true despite them using the wrong ritual. Wish Craft isn’t always a straightforward process.
Locations - Favor Tree
The Favor Tree is a location in In Stars and Time. It's located west of Dormont. A Favor Tree (according to the House of Change) is the biggest tree in any given area. People believe that a Favor Tree can grant wishes. To wish for something a person must pick up a leaf, think of a wish, blow (the wish) into the leaf, repeat the wish three times, fold the leaf closed and then let the leaf go. In ACT 1, Siffrin makes a wish of the player's choice. There are four options for what to wish for, each one related to one of the party members. It can only be accessed after first talking to all party members in Dormont about Mirabelle's sleepover. At first, Isabeau stands by the tree. However, he leaves after Siffrin talks to him. In ACT 2 and beyond, Loop sits under the tree, where the player may go to ask for advice. If the player stands next to the tree and interacts with a souvenir, Loop can comment on it as well. Loop can only be interacted with once Isabeau has once again been told to leave the tree, after which he can be found in the northern section of Dormont. At the start of ACT 2, Isabeau remarks that he has noticed something odd about the tree, shortly after revealed to be Loop's presence. Later on, it is revealed that Siffrin's initial wish had the implied meaning of wanting to stay with his party, which accidentally got them stuck in a time loop. During ACT 6, the favor tree can be returned to, and depending on certain criteria, one of two events triggers: Loop is nowhere to be found, and Siffrin leaves the Silver Coin where they used to sit. A duplicate of the Silver Coin sits where Loop used to. Interacting with this coin triggers a battle against Loop. In the past, Isabeau presumably made a wish to pass his Defender exam in Jouvente, even though he denies this when questioned.
