summary
House Tyrell of Highgarden is one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms, being Lords Paramount of the Mander and the liege lords of the Reach. A large, wealthy house, its wealth is only surpassed among the Great Houses by House Lannister, and the Tyrells can field the greatest armies. Additionally, if they call the ships of the Redwyne fleet, the lords of the Shield Islands, and the coastal lords, they can command a navy that equals if not surpasses the royal fleet of King's Landing.
Highgarden is an ancient seat of rule and the heart of chivalry in the Seven Kingdoms; the Tyrells style themselves 'Defenders of the Marches' and 'High Marshals of the Reach', and traditionally, they have been Wardens of the South in addition to Lords Paramount of the Mander. Their sigil is a golden rose on a green field, and their words are "Growing Strong". Members of the family tend to have curly brown hair and brown eyes.
Willas Tyrell history
Willas is the eldest son of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden, and Lady Alerie Hightower. During his first tourney, which Willas entered as a squire of a young age due to his father's wishes, he competed against Prince Oberyn Martell of Dorne, who knocked Willas from his horse. Unfortunately, Willas's foot caught in his stirrup as he fell, and he pulled his horse on top of him, crushing his leg and leaving him a cripple.
Though the incident fanned the flames of the considerable and historical enmity between Houses Tyrell and Martell, Willas bore Oberyn no personal ill will, and the two long remained in correspondence, sharing a passion for horseflesh.[9] Ever since his accident, Willas has occupied himself with scholarly studies, as he cannot be a knight. Willas's grandmother, Olenna Tyrell, despite having a low opinion of her son Mace, has a high opinion of her grandson.
His younger brother, Garlan, was plump as a boy. To protect him from a potential denigrating nickname, such as given to his uncle Garth "the Gross", Willas was the first to call him "Garlan the Gallant". When Willas's sister Margaery was a girl, he would often read to her and draw her pictures of the stars.
Princess Arianne Martell once considered marrying Willas, but her father Prince Doran refused to send her to Highgarden to meet him. Nevertheless, she tried to travel there on her own, with the help of her cousin Tyene Sand, but her uncle Prince Oberyn Martell caught them at Vaith and brought them back to Sunspear.
Willas Tyrell appearance and personality
Willas is crippled, with a bad leg. He is described as intelligent, studious, educated, and kind, and is renowned for breeding the finest hawks, hounds, and horses in the Seven Kingdoms. He sometimes hawks with an eagle. Willas is also described as mild and courtly, fond of reading books and looking at the stars. Petyr Baelish considers Willas to be gentle, pious, and good-hearted, but also boring.
Garlan Tyrell history
Garlan was plump in his youth. His elder brother, Willas, shrewdly dubbed him "the Gallant" to save him from the indignity that befell an uncle, nicknamed Garth the Gross.
Garlan Tyrell appearance and personality
Garlan is similar in appearance to his younger brother, Ser Loras Tyrell, but he is taller, more broadly built, and has a beard. Garlan is five years older than Loras.
Garlan is an exceptionally skilled swordsman, preferring to train against three or four swordsmen, so as to better prepare himself for actual battle, but his lack of interest in gaining glory makes him less famous than Loras..
Loras Tyrell history
Loras Tyrell, also known as the Knight of Flowers, is a knight from House Tyrell and the third son of Lord Mace Tyrell of Highgarden and his wife, Lady Alerie Hightower. He is a highly skilled knight and jouster. His tournament successes, dazzling good looks, and ostentatious showmanship has made him a celebrated figure in the courts of the Seven Kingdoms.
His personal coat of arms is three golden roses on a field of green, indicating his position as a third son.
Loras was born at Highgarden in 282 AC. He has two older brothers, Willas and Ser Garlan, and one younger sister, Margaery.
Loras squired for Lord Renly Baratheon at Storm's End, and grew close to him. According to a semi-canon source, he soon became Renly's lover. At the young age of fifteen, Loras received his knighthood.
Loras purchased his armor from Tobho Mott's shop in the Street of Steel in King's Landing. During the tourney on Prince Joffrey's name day in 298 AC, at the age of fifteen, Loras defeated Ser Hosteen Frey and Ser Jaime Lannister of the Kingsguard in the joust. Renly's brother, King Robert I Baratheon, won a Valyrian steel dagger from Loras's victory.
Loras Tyrell appearance and personality
Loras is exceptionally handsome. His hair is a mass of lazy brown curls and ringlets which tumble over his eyes, which have been described as brown, liquid gold, big, and intelligent and lively. Tyrion Lannister thinks Loras is beautiful and already a legend, and that half the girls in the Seven Kingdoms want to bed him and all the boys want to be him. Sansa Stark also thinks Loras is beautiful, and that he is lithe and graceful with wonderful eyes.
Loras is beloved by the smallfolk, especially women. While courteous he is still thirsty for glory and can be short-tempered and impetuous. Tyrion finds him a prickly lad. According to a semi-canon source, Loras is homosexual, and his father, Mace, and grandmother, Olenna, are aware of his sexuality. Loras is Mace's favorite son.
Despite his youth and slender frame, Loras is a capable warrior, using axes, lances, morningstars, and swords to deadly effect. According to George R. R. Martin, a case can be made that Loras is the greatest active swordsman in Westeros. When asked about the strongest fighters, he again mentions Loras. Loras's silver armor, which is decorated with sapphires and twining black vines, was made by Tobho Mott. He also uses silver mail and a green shield. Golden roses decorate the crest of his helm. Loras wears a cloak of forget-me-nots sewn to a heavy woolen cape. His horses include a speedy grey mare and a tall white stallion.
Margaery Tyrell history
Margaery Tyrell is the only daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell and his wife, Lady Alerie Hightower.
Margaery was born at Highgarden in 283 AC to Lord Mace Tyrell and Lady Alerie Hightower. She has three older brothers, Willas, Ser Garlan, and Ser Loras. When she was a little girl, Willas used to read to her, and draw her pictures of the stars. Margaery has been riding horses since she was old enough to walk.
Margaery Tyrell appearance and personality
Margaery has thick, softly curling brown hair and large brown eyes. She has a slender but womanly figure with smooth and unblemished pale skin and small breasts. Margaery is fair and lively, with a shy and sweet smile. She is regarded as beautiful or pretty by most. Tyrion Lannister considers her to be just as comely as Sansa Stark. Both Sansa and Cersei Lannister note the similarities in appearance between Margaery and her youngest brother, Loras. According to Cersei, Margaery and Loras look more alike than Cersei and her twin, Jaime. According to Renly Baratheon, there are people who claim Margaery looks like Lyanna Stark.
Margaery is intelligent and shrewd, taking after her cunning grandmother, Lady Olenna Tyrell. Margaery is her protégée, and as such, Olenna has made certain that Margaery is capable of protecting herself from those who might use or abuse her. Varys describes Margaery as sweet and tractable. Sansa considers Margaery to be sweet and gentle, while Cersei considers her to be restless, as Margaery often goes for a ride, a trip by boat, or out hawking. The generous Margaery is popular with smallfolk. She follows the Faith of the Seven.
Margaery's attire includes a sheer gown of ivory silk, Myrish lace, and seed pearls. She also wears green with a cloak of autumn flowers, and a pale green samite gown with a tight-laced bodice that bares her shoulders and the top of her bosom.
Olenna Tyrell history
Olenna Tyrell, née Redwyne, is the widow of Lord Luthor Tyrell and the mother of Mace Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden. Born into House Redwyne of the Arbor, she is commonly known as the Queen of Thorns because of her sharp tongue.
Olenna Redwyne was betrothed to Prince Daeron Targaryen when they were both nine, but she claims she did everything she could to make sure it never came to fruition. According to maesters, it was Daeron who broke the betrothal when they were eighteen in 246 AC, but Olenna speaks contemptuously of the "queer notions" of House Targaryen and Baratheon, presumably referring to Targaryen madness as well as to Renly Baratheon and Daeron's homosexuality.
Olenna later married Luthor Tyrell, the heir to Highgarden, who had also been spurned by his own Targaryen betrothed. At some point Luthor became Lord of Highgarden, and he and Olenna had three children together, Mace, Mina, and Janna. Olenna says she loved Luthor well enough, as he was kind and not unskilled in bed, but she still considered him an oaf. An example she cites is that Luthor rode off a cliff to his death while hawking, because he had been looking up at the sky and not paying attention to where his horse was going. Olenna feels that her son Mace is also an oaf, and regrets that she did not beat him more often when he was a child, as that would have made him more ready to heed her advice as an adult. Olenna's nephew is Paxter Redwyne, Lord of the Arbor, who is also married to her daughter Mina Tyrell.
Olenna has twin guardsmen named Erryk and Arryk, whom she refers to as "Left and Right" because she cannot tell them apart.
Olenna Tyrell appearance and personality
Lady Olenna is a small woman, the size of a child. The white-haired lady appears wrinkled and wizened. She has soft, spotted hands, with gaunt thin fingers. Olenna smells of rosewater, but she also has has an old woman's sour breath and toothless smiles. Olenna walks with a cane, and claims to be near deaf, but both might be part of her feigning to be more frail than she actually is. Olenna is older than Lord Hoster Tully.
Olenna rarely shies from stating her opinion, and is a cunning old woman with a wicked wit and a sharp tongue. This has earned her the moniker "Queen of Thorns", though she does not care for the name. According to her granddaughter Margaery, she is not the most patient of women. Although Olenna regularly mocks members of her own family, she seems to be a staunch supporter of Tyrell family interests.
Ser Arys Oakheart of the Kingsguard thinks of the Queen of Thorns as a strong woman.
Mace Tyrell history
Mace Tyrell is the Lord of Highgarden, Lord Paramount of the Mander, Defender of the Marches, High Marshal of the Reach, Warden of the South, and head of House Tyrell.
Mace became Lord of Highgarden once his father, Lord Luthor Tyrell, rode off a cliff while hawking.
Mace was one of the attendees at the tourney at Harrenhal in 281 AC
During Robert's Rebellion, Mace was in command of troops from the Reach who marched against Lord Robert Baratheon of Storm's End. Mace is credited with defeating Robert in the Battle of Ashford, although the van under Lord Randyll Tarly achieved most of the victory before Mace's arrival at Ashford. He then led the siege of Storm's End, which was successfully held by Robert's brother, Stannis Baratheon. Mace and his closest bannerman, Lord Paxter Redwyne, surrendered to Robert's ally, Lord Eddard Stark, after the Sack of King's Landing.
According to Prince Oberyn Martell, Mace encouraged his heir, Willas Tyrell, to participate in tourneys before he was ready, leading to the accidental crippling of Willas by Oberyn. Some of the Iron Throne's debts under the new king, Robert I Baratheon, are owed to Lord Mace.
Mace Tyrell appearance and personality
Mace is a handsome and once-powerful-looking man who has since turned fat. He has curly brown hair and cuts his beard, which has white and grey specks in it, into a triangular shape. He is often red-faced. Cersei Lannister thinks of Mace as the same age as her father, Lord Tywin Lannister, although Mace is closer in age to her than to Tywin.
Mace has a generally jovial personality. He thinks himself a great warrior, although his reputation rests solely on the victory over Robert I Baratheon in the Battle of Ashford during Robert's Rebellion, which had largely been won by Mace's bannerman, Lord Randyll Tarly, before Mace arrived at the battlefield, and the command Mace held during the siege of Storm's End later that war, which ended when Mace dipped his banners to Lord Eddard Stark. Mace is ambitious, wishing to see a grandchild of his on the Iron Throne. Despite that, his mother, Lady Olenna Tyrell, can easily hector him, and so influence his decisions. Mace is considered an oaf by his mother and by Cersei Lannister, and a fool by Prince Oberyn Martell and Cersei. His favorite son is Loras, the youngest, and his closest friend is Lord Paxter Redwyne, his brother-in-law. Mace has a great dislike for Dornishmen, especially Prince Oberyn, who accidentally crippled Mace's heir, Willas.
Mace dresses in green velvet trimmed with sable, as well as a gold mantle over green.
Alerie Hightower history
Lady Alerie Hightower is the daughter of Lord Leyton Hightower of Oldtown, and the spouse of Lord Mace Tyrell of Highgarden. She is the mother of his four children, Willas, Garlan, Loras, and Margaery.
Lady Alerie is part of the retinue of her daughter, Margaery Tyrell, when they travel to King's Landing.
Lady Tyrell sedately dances with her husband, Lord Mace Tyrell during the wedding of Tyrion Lannister and Sansa Stark.
Alerie proudly attends the wedding of King Joffrey I Baratheon and Margaery. When Joffrey chokes to death during the feast, Alerie comforts her daughter by explaining that the king choked on pie. Queen Regent Cersei Lannister, however, insists that her son was poisoned and accuses her brother, Tyrion.
Alerie Hightower appearance and personality
Alerie is tall and beautiful, with long silvery hair which she braids with jeweled rings. She is younger than her husband, Lord Mace Tyrell.
Sansa Stark finds Alerie to be dignified, but Cersei Lannister thinks her vapid.
Highgarden layout
Highgarden is located on a broad verdant hill overlooking the Mander. The castle is surrounded by three rings of white stone whose crenellated curtain walls increase in height. Between the outer and middle walls is a famous briar labyrinth which serves to entertain as well as slow invaders. The oldest towers, squat and square, date from the Age of Heroes. Newer towers are tall and slender, round fortifications dating from after the coming of the Andals.
The castle sept, which has rows of stained-glass windows honoring Garth Greenhand and the Seven, is matched only by the Great Sept of Baelor and the Starry Sept. The castle's godswood contains three weirwoods known as the Three Singers. The palatial keep is decorated with statues and colonnades. Also within Highgarden's walls are groves, fountains, and courtyards. The castle's structures are covered in ivy, grapes, and climbing roses.
Highgarden is filled with flowers, singers, pipers, fiddlers and harpers. The stables have a fine selection of horseflesh, and there are pleasure boats to sail along the Mander. There are fields of golden roses that stretch as far as the eye can see. Fruits grown nearby include melons, peaches, and fireplums.
