Alexander Sartorius was a scientist living a happy life with his wife and son. His father's death from cancer inspired him to research a special nuclear energy treatment that could potentially eradicate the cancer permanently without harming the patient, but lack of funding forced him to seek help from criminal mastermind Rupert Thorne. In exchange for unlimited resources for his research, Alexander allowed Thorne to share his findings with his business partners.

However, Alexander soon discovered that Thorne's accomplices were the Biala government, a fascist regime similar to the one from which his wife had to flee before she came to the United States. Fearing what they would do with his research, he began sending Thorne false data, but the Biala scientists eventually uncovered the deception and demanded an explanation from Thorne. In retaliation, Thorn ordered the murder of Alexander's wife and son and accused the scientist of the murders. He later dragged him to his laboratory to recover authentic research data and, once he had it, ordered three of his henchmen to place Alexander in quarters to be exposed to nuclear radiation. Thorne and his men then left, believing that Alexander had died as a result of the test.

Regardless, Alexander survived, but was forever transformed into a radioactive skeleton with bright transparent skin and the ability to incinerate anything he touched. Driven mad by this series of events, Alexander attacked Thorne's mansion that same night and killed the gangster, as well as his wife and two children. He then killed three of Thorne's henchmen one by one, and later took over all of Thorne's business and assets, becoming Gotham's new criminal mastermind, Dr. Phosphorus. Phosphorus used Thorne's criminal empire to live large, surrounding himself with money, women and parties in an attempt to fill the void left by the death of his family, until he was eventually defeated and arrested by Batman.
