Remember, they are in a private school, where there are many rich kids. Hanna, is from a Japanese mother and a Canadian father, the only bad thing about this, is that her parents are bankrupt, Hanna pretends to be a rich and spoiled girl, to have the 'perfect' life since all her group of 'friends are rich. She doesn't live in a luxury house, and keeps that a secret, she pretends to be on a diet so she doesn't have to buy her own food (since she has no money) and she works at a McDonald's on the weekends that pays her 20 dollars a week, where she buys expensive things to fit in among her friends.
