After marriage, each concubine received a new surname, as it was forbidden to use one's own family name after marriage, and it was extremely rare for one to receive the imperial family's surname. For example, a concubine named Sana from the Yohwa family would become Concubine Cho, as this was her new surname, meaning "tranquility."

Nowadays, the emperor has many concubines and concubines, but there are four main ones:
