All this time, Svidrigailov lives in wealth, comfort, but hopeless boredom. He becomes a father, but his children do not interest him at all. The appearance of the governess Dunya Raskolnikova in the house revives Arkady Petrovich, who offers the defenseless girl to become his lover. Marfa Petrovna, who accidentally finds out about this, soon dies unexpectedly. Svidrigailov goes to Petersburg to try again to persuade Dunya to cohabit. He is refused.
