Ichigo Kurosaki edit See main article: Ichigo Kurosaki Ichigo Kurosaki (黒崎 一護 Kurosaki Ichigo?) is the hero and protagonist of the Bleach series. Ichigo is an orange-haired high school student who accidentally becomes a "Shinigami substitute", after unintentionally absorbing most of the powers of the Shinigami Rukia Kuchiki.[6] His cynical and impulsive nature at first makes him ill-disposed to the duty of a Shinigami substitute (the term shinigami was adapted in the Brazilian version of the anime to soul reaper). Over time, he ends up accepting and adapting to his new powers.[7] When he was creating the series, Kubo commented that Rukia Kuchiki was the first character he created, because she did not fit properly into the role of protagonist. The character is voiced in the Japanese version of the anime by Masakazu Morita, in the English adaptation by Johnny Yong Bosch,[8][9] and in the Brazilian version by Fábio Lucindo.[10]
Rukia Kuchiki edit See main article: Rukia Kuchiki Rukia Kuchiki (朽木 ルキア Kuchiki Rukia?) is the Shinigami tasked with exterminating the Hollows in Ichigo's hometown of Karakura. Despite her physical appearance as a teenager, Rukia is in reality ten times older than Ichigo, being approximately 150 years old. At the beginning of the story, Rukia is forced to transfer her Shinigami powers to Ichigo, and thus assume a temporary lifestyle typical of a human being.[6] She soon enrolls in the local high school and takes up residence in his closet, while teaching him how to be a temporary Shinigami substitute.[7] She is quiet, graceful, intelligent, and has an obsession with drawing "ecchi bunnies". Rukia often treats Ichigo with kicks to the face and similar slightly comical tactics to "wake him up". She was the first character in the series created by Kubo, and her design was eventually defined and passed on to the other Shinigami.[1] Rukia is voiced in the Japanese version of the anime by Fumiko Orikasa, Michelle Ruff in the English adaptation, and Tatiane Keplmair in the Brazilian adaptation.[8][9]
Uryū Ishida edit See main article: Uryū Ishida Uryū Ishida (石田 雨竜 Ishida Uryū?) is a Quincy, a clan of humans created to combat hollows, and historical enemies of the Shinigami. He is the son of Ryuuken Ishida. He holds a deep resentment towards all Shinigami, including Ichigo, and is the initial antagonist of the series. He is a very proud and antisocial person.[11] As the series progresses, Ishida comes to view his rival Ichigo differently, and eventually becomes a valuable ally. Uryu's powers as a Quincy involve capturing spiritual particles called Reishi. He uses them to create numerous "spirit arrows" from his Quincy bow. Ishida can also fire beams of light with his bow, and even without it, he can still use various types of Quincy techniques and artifacts.[12] At one point during the anime's plot, Uryu loses his abilities while fighting the captain of the 12th squad of the Gotei 13, Mayuri Kurotsuchi, and regains them after a long and arduous training with his father. Ishida is voiced in the Japanese version of the anime by Noriaki Sugiyama, and by Derek Stephen Prince in the English adaptation and by Alfredo Rollo and Márcio Marconatto in the Brazilian version of the anime and Pedro Alcântara in the live action film.
Yasutora "Chad" Sado edit See main article: Yasutora Sado Yasutora Sado (茶渡 泰虎 Sado Yasutora?), better known as Chad (チャド Chado?), is one of Ichigo's friends at school. He is a biracial Japanese/Mexican student who is of unusual size.[13] Despite his imposing appearance, Chad is very humble and kind, and usually refuses a fight, only accepting one in extreme cases, often to protect those he loves. Unlike Ichigo and the others, Chad does not initially have the ability to see spirits, but this changes when he tries to protect Karin (Ichigo's sister) from a Hollow. In this encounter, he acquires an ability distinct from the others, which strengthens his right arm through a type of armor, allowing him to fight on equal terms with a Hollow. Eventually, Chad discovers that his power closely resembles that of a Fullbringer, and soon ends up joining Xcution to help Ichigo regain his Shinigami powers lost during the Winter Battle. Chad is voiced in the Japanese version of the anime by Hiroki Yasumoto and by Jamieson Price in the English adaptation and by Cassius Romero in the Brazilian version.[14] Orihime Inoue edit Orihime Inoue (井上 織姫 Inoue Orihime?) is a young girl who studies in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki, and has a crush on Aizen. When Inoue was only three years old, her older brother Sora, who was eighteen, and she left their parents' house because they were too abusive towards them. Later, when Orihime was in elementary school, he died in an accident.[15] Although she initially did not have spiritual powers, Inoue later acquired them. Her ability is to alter and reject phenomena from the past, being able to heal wounds and after-effects.[16] She is a naive and insufferable girl. She only knows how to say "Ichigo-kun". She is voiced by Yuki Matsuoka in the Japanese version of the anime, by Sheh in the English adaptation and Melissa Garcia and Luisa Porto in the Brazilian adaptation.[17][18] She does not have shinigami powers.
Orihime Inoue edit Orihime Inoue (井上 織姫 Inoue Orihime?) is a young girl who studies in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki, and has a crush on Aizen. Later, when Orihime was in elementary school, he died in an accident.[15] Although she initially does not have spiritual powers, Inoue later acquires them. She is voiced by Yuki Matsuoka in the Japanese version of the anime, by Sheh in the English adaptation and Melissa Garcia and Luisa Porto in the Brazilian adaptation.[17][18] She does not have shinigami powers.
Shinigami edit See main article: Shinigami (Bleach) Shinigami (死神? "God of Death"?) are spiritual entities from the anime/manga series Bleach, inspired by the Shinigami of Japanese culture. In the story, Shinigami act in the world as "balancers", purifying Hollows and guiding souls to the other world, the Soul Society. After completing their training at the academy, most Shinigami decide to join the Gotei 13, the main military organization of Soul Society, founded by Commander Yamamoto Genryuusai Shigekuni. Above the Gotei 13, there is the Central 46, which deals with the legal, administrative and legislative system of Soul Society. There is also the Royal Guard (Zero Division) in charge of protecting the Soul King's palace. Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto edit Genryūsai Yamamoto Shigekuni (山本元柳斎重国 "Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni"?) was the captain of the 1st division and leader of the Gotei 13. He is an old, muscular man with many scars around his body, showing his experience in numerous battles in the past. Yamamoto believes that laws should be followed for the benefit of the community, rejecting those who wish to break them. However, Yamamoto has already broken such rules due to owing a debt to Ichigo, who fought alongside him against the traitors of Soul Society. He founded the Shinigami Academy approximately 1,000 years before the main storyline of Bleach.
Suì-Fēng (砕蜂(ソイフォン) Soifon?, pinyin: Suì Fēng). She is the current captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13 and also the commander of the Onmitsu Kidou, a special operations and enforcement group of Soul Society. She is a hard-working and focused Shinigami and has a strong tendency to follow orders. She is adversarial towards her subordinates, as she believes that this keeps them in line. During her childhood, she served as a bodyguard and eventual protégé to the former captain of the 2nd squad Yoruichi Shihōin, with whom she developed a close and deep relationship. However, when Yoruichi fled Soul Society, for reasons unknown to her, she developed a feeling of resentment that was only comforted a century later, when the two fought.[21]
Kenpachi Zaraki edit Kenpachi Zaraki (更木 剣八 Zaraki Kenpachi?) is the captain of the 11th division of the Gotei 13. Previously, his lieutenant was Yachiru Kusajishi and his current lieutenant is Ikkaku Madarame. While still self-centered and violent, his actions tend to be for the best and his relationship with his division and others is always portrayed comically. This comedic shift is mostly centered around his appearances in the Bleach anime and omake stories, with the exception of the occasional diatribe between him and Yachiru. He is depicted as having a terrible sense of direction, and is frequently depicted in omake stories asking his lieutenant Yachiru for directions to a particular place (who then randomly points in a direction, even though she herself has a terrible sense of direction).
Renji Abarai edit Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次 Abarai Renji?) Reserved, the lieutenant of the 6th Division is almost always irritated by Ichigo Kurosaki's presence. With tribal tattoos on his forehead, Renji is a very dynamic character. His personality ranges from smug and arrogant to restless and depressed after a major defeat, but he shows himself to be an incredibly serious and determined fighter when faced with a real threat. Initially, he was tasked with apprehending Rukia, along with his captain and Rukia's older brother, Byakuya Kuchiki. The two went to the world of the living, where Renji defeated Uryū Ishida but was defeated by Ichigo. After completing his mission, he returns to Soul Society and Rukia is held in custody awaiting her execution, but before this happens, Ichigo arrives in Soul Society to rescue her and Renji is again defeated by Ichigo, after his defeat, he begged him to save his friend. His story was lived mostly in the poorest city in the world of the dead, until he met Rukia, and then became a Shinigami. During Ichigo's training to develop his Bankai (secretly) Renji appears to train with him. Tōshirō Hitsugaya edit Tōshirō Hitsugaya (日番谷 冬獅郎 Hitsugaya Tōshirō?) is the captain of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Rangiku Matsumoto. Captain Hitsugaya is usually very serious and mature, and as such Hitsugaya hates anything he considers childish, as well as being described as anything close to a child. As an elementary school child, Hitsugaya once went to the living world to help Ichigo and his friends, however, upon going to school, he went straight to second grade in Ichigo and his friends' class. Despite their differences in personality, Hitsugaya and Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto seem very close. Tōshirō is shown to be easily annoyed by others, making small talk or drawing attention to themselves.
Arrancars edit Arrancars are a group of Hollows who have gained Shinigami-like powers by removing their masks. The individuals Aizen transformed into Arrancars using the Hōgyoku have overall capabilities far beyond that of previous Arrancars. The ten strongest Arrancars form the Espada. Arrancars are the result of Hollows removing their masks. However, an average Hollow removing their mask would not be a problem for the Gotei 13: to hold their own against the Gotei 13, the removal of their masks would need to be Menos or stronger. An Arrancar who was previously only a normal Hollow, rather than a Menos class, has been shown to be more powerful than some Vasto Lorde. This is shown when the Hammerhead Arrancar manages to defeat Tier Harribel and her future Fracción. Pseudo-Arrancar have not developed much in the past few decades. Aizen was the first to create a breakthrough; Aizen attempted to create a full-fledged Arrancar using the Hōgyoku.[4] The number that Arrancar (with numbers 11 and above) are given is not the end of their strength, but rather the order of their birth. First, through the Hōgyoku, they are reborn from Hollows into Arrancars. Then, according to the order in which they are born, they are assigned a number, starting with eleven. Arrancars and ordinary Hollows differ in several aspects:
Humanoid Form: A Menos usually assumes a human form when they become an Arrancar. The only ones who will definitely stay 100% humanoid are Vasto Lorde-class Menos. For the remaining two tiers, there are many who do not have a completely humanoid form despite becoming Arrancar. Therefore, the closer one looks at a Hollow, the lower their reasoning power becomes.[6] Every Arrancar has a hollow somewhere, as well as fragments of their Hollow form (in the form of protrusions and partial masks). Some Arrancar have claimed that they gave up their human forms in order to obtain greater power.[7] While some Arrancar (e.g. Nnoitra Gilga and Tier Harribel) prefer to hide traces of their past, others choose to hide their faces completely to escape unwanted attention. Most also have a colored marking of some sort on their face, though some only gain these markings upon releasing their Zanpakutō (e.g. Nnoitra, Szayel Aporro Granz, and Halibel). Some instances that include visible markings without releasing a Zanpakutō include Ulquiorra's tear marks, Sun-Sun's pink dots, the streaks under Grimmjow's eyes, the marking that runs across Nelliel's cheekbones and nose, and the markings on Yammy's facial bones. Physiology: Uryū Ishida theorized that Arrancar share not only their Shinigami powers, but also their anatomy. During his battle with Cirucci Sanderwicci he pointed to the area where the Chain of Fate would be located, and upon striking it Cirucci immediately lost not only her release form and mask fragment, but seemingly all traces of her former power.[8] Hole: One of the most distinguishing features of an Arrancar is the hole in their body. It is said to represent the lack of souls that are difficult to fill.[10
Zanpakutō: The Arrancar seal the cores of their abilities into the form of a sword. It is entirely different from the usage of Shinigami. When they release seals from their Zanpakutō, they unleash their true power and their true form.[11] The combat efficiency of an Arrancar with a released Zanpakutō is increased several times.[12] Therefore, an Arrancar's release of their Zanpakutō is merely a temporary restoration to their former selves, granting them powers that their Hollow form possessed. The act of release is called Resurrección (Spanish for "Resurrection"), which is activated with a command phrase followed by the name of the sword. An Espada's Resurrección is claimed to be different from that of a normal Arrancar.[13] Appearance: The Arrancar under Aizen's command have a standard theme for their clothing. Their uniforms consist of a white jacket, black belt, white hakama, black tabi, and white zōri that bears an opposite resemblance to a Shinigami's zōri; in essence, the uniforms are basically Shinigami uniforms with inverted colors. The uniforms that Arrancar sport are more varied than those worn by Shinigami however.
Personality Traits and Mentality While most Arrancar develop or maintain their personality traits, most (not all) Arrancar depicted in the series appear to be equally cold, cruel, ambitious, impatient, selfish, overconfident, arrogant, impulsive, brutal, ruthless, battle-hungry, haughty, short-tempered, and/or indifferent. Not all Arrancar residing in Hueco Mundo are loyal to Aizen. They prefer not to interfere with his plans, presumably because of Aizen's immense amount of power and army of servants. It is for this reason that many Arrancar have evolved to naturally feel the need to align themselves with him in order to obtain more power. While some Arrancar choose to follow Aizen in the hopes that he will deliver them salvation, others are allies with him purely out of respect. As Aisslinger Wernarr put it, Aizen is someone who is fearless, which creatures born out of fear and pain, such as Hollows, find admirable. Despite their pride, some Arrancar will side with a greater force, as the Wandenreich managed to recruit many Arrancar by force, and despite being enslaved some Arrancar have shown to still be loyal to Sōsuke Aizen. Although Arrancar are Hollows who have gained Shinigami-like powers, most still refer to themselves as Hollows (such as Ulquiorra, Zommari, Grimmjow, etc.). This is similar to how Ichigo Kurosaki still refers to himself as a Shinigami despite his constant evolution into a Visard.
Espada edit Yammy Riyalgo edit Yammy Riyalgo (ヤミー・リヤルゴ Yamī Riyarugo?, also known as Yammy Llargo in Japan), is the Tenth Espada of Aizen Sousuke's army, is a merciless, sadistic Arrancar, who does not think much and uses only brute force. Interestingly, when he uses his Resurrección he becomes the number 0 Espada, becoming, in theory, the most powerful of all. He almost never uses his Zanpakutō in combat, preferring to combine physical strength and the use of cero. He appears in the human world along with the fourth Espada Ulquiorra to collect data on Ichigo Kurosaki.[22] His tattoo is located on his left shoulder and his cause of death is anger. Coyote Starrk edit 'Coyote Starrk ( コヨーテ・スターク Also known as Koyōte Sutāku in Japan?), is the Primera Espada of Ainzen Sousuke's army, is a solitary Arrancar, except for living in the company of Lilynette Gingerback, who is nothing more than the other half of his soul. He is extremely powerful, has a lazy and detached style, does not have an aggressive or arrogant nature. His tattoo is located on his left hand and his cause of death is loneliness.[23] Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez edit Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez (グリムジョー・ジャガージャック Gurimujō Jagājakku?) is the Sixth Espada of Aizen Sousuke's army. His name is based on the European architect Nicholas Grimshaw[24] and the German word hunter. Grimmjow has a punk and authoritarian personality and is always looking for stronger opponents, being only intimidated by Aizen. He also has a great sense of honor and tries to never fight opponents he considers weak.[25] His tattoo is on his back and his cause of death is destruction.
Bounts edit The Bounts (バウント, Baunto) are members of a clan, made up of immortal beings capable of achieving superhuman strength. Clearly inspired by vampires, they feed on souls to gain immortality and strength. They suck the souls of dead people. They use Dolls, spiritual objects controlled by them, as their power, working as a team. Each Bount has its own Doll. Normally, the Bounts hate to group together, preferring isolation. This clan exists only in the anime, never appearing in the manga.
Antagonists Byakuya Kuchiki Byakuya appears as the Captain of the Gotei 13's sixth division and one of the first antagonists of the series. Byakuya strongly believes in law and order, as the head of one of the great noble families and captain of the Gotei 13, he has always worked hard for a peaceful society. He believes that if someone in his position does not follow the rules as a good example, no one will. He had intended to arrest and execute his sister Rukia Kuchiki before being stopped by Kurosaki Ichigo and discovering that it was a plan by Aizen Sousuke. He is currently a reluctant ally due to his enmity with Ichigo. Aizen Sousuke was introduced as the Captain of the Gotei 13's fifth division. He was shown to be well-liked by his lieutenant Momo Hinamori and well-liked in Soul Society. He was a person who everyone believed to be an example of justice and equality, until he was revealed to be a traitor.[27] His main goal was to invade the real dimension to kill the Soul King and take the throne. With his superior spiritual power and abilities, he was an extremely strategic and calculating villain, who almost achieved his goal. He was the main villain until the middle of the series. He was defeated by Ichigo and sealed away by Urahara Kisuke. When he was released from Muken (prison), he returned to his calm and casual personality, letting go of Shunsui Kyōraku's praise of his current abilities, and gradually underwent a change of heart, being willing to fight Yhwach and help Ichigo before returning to Muken. Jin Kariya edit Jin Kariya is the leader of the Bounts who planned to destroy the entire Soul Society through the Jōkaishō, the device that created the Bounts. He was originally Eugene Currier, a boy who befriended the Soul Society scientist Ran'tao before being forced to leave his home when the Soul Reapers were sent to kill the Bounts.
Jin Kariya's doll is Messer, having long absorbed it to manipulate wind without releasing it in its true form. While using Messer's full power, Kariya can move wind at such speeds to generate lightning and move at high speeds similar to a Flash Step. Eventually defeated in the end, Kariya's true agenda is revealed to be the mutually assured destruction of the Soul Reapers and the Bounts.
Kūgo Ginjō edit He is the leader of Xcution. In the past, he was the first substitute Soul Reaper before going into hiding after learning that he was not trusted by Soul Society. Ginjō later established Xcution and became its leader, while having the Fullbringers exchange energies with him to cement his organization. Soon after, Ginjō has Tsukishima alter his memory to win over Ichigo before having his memories restored by siphoning Ichigo's Fullbring. While his Fullbring power is Cross of Scaffold, transforming his Saltire pendant into a large Claymore, Ginjō can use his Soul Reaper Badge to increase his power. Yhwach edit He is the main villain and by far the most powerful enemy in the entire series, he is the ruler of the Wandenreich and the supposed progenitor of all Quincies. Yhwach is also the son of the Soul King, the being whose existence is vital to Soul Society. Yhwach discovers the epithet "A" for "The Almighty", Japanese for "Omniscient"), the ability to see anything and everything that can occur in all possible futures, and when he sees and knows of a power, he becomes incapable of defeating it. At its full capacity, the ability can also alter the future in any way Yhwach desires. When Yhwach was born, he already demonstrated supernatural abilities by infusing a portion of his soul into others to heal them of injuries and disabilities. But the moment a person healed in this manner dies, Yhwach regains that fragment while gaining that person's abilities and knowledge.
Other characters edit Kurosaki family edit Isshin Kurosaki edit Isshin Kurosaki (黒崎 一心, Kurosaki Isshin) is, at the beginning of the series, the unassuming father of Ichigo, Karin, and Yuzu, and the head of the family. Later in the series, it is revealed that his father was in fact a former Shinigami and captain of the 10th Division, making him the predecessor of its current leader, Tōshirō Hitsugaya. Forced to flee his duties as a Shinigami after sacrificing his powers to save the life of his future wife, Masaki, Isshin opened the Kurosaki Clinic in the human world, living a simple family life in Karakura Town. He adopted his wife's surname, Kurosaki, but was originally a member of the Shiba clan, making him related to Ganju, Kūkaku, and Kaien Shiba. His goofy, energetic, and fun-loving demeanor often belies his quick-wittedness and wisdom, which his eldest son Ichigo has been able to rely on at points in the series. Isshin is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in the Japanese version of the anime and by Patrick Seitz in the English dub. Isshin is portrayed by Yōsuke Eguchi in the live-action film, while Keith Silverstein voices him in the English dub of the film. Karin Kurosaki and Yuzu Kurosaki edit Karin Kurosaki (黒崎 夏梨, Kurosaki Karin) and Yuzu Kurosaki (黒崎 遊子, Kurosaki Yuzu) are Ichigo's younger sisters.[28] While Karin is typically cynical and sarcastic with the ability to see spirits, Yuzu is more soft-spoken, empathetic, and emotional. When Ichigo loses his powers after defeating Aizen, starting his first year of high school with Yuzu, Karin takes on a more active role in seeing and interacting with ghosts. Karin is voiced by Rie Kugimiya in the Japanese version of the anime and by Kate Higgins in the English dub. In the live-action film, she is voiced by Miyu Ando.
Yuzu is voiced by Ayumi Sena in the Japanese version of the anime and by Janice Kawaye in the English dub. In the live-action film, she is played by Kokoro Hirosawa. In the English dub of the live-action film, both are voiced by Janice Kawaye. In the English dub of the action film, both are voiced by Janice Kawaye.
Kazui Kurosaki edit Kazui Kurosaki (黒崎 一勇, Kurosaki Kazui) is the son of Ichigo and Orihime, who possesses Shinigami powers. His face greatly resembles his mother's, having the same eye shape and facial curves, while he inherited his father's bright orange hair, though his hair is noticeably straighter than Ichigo's. Kazui is an adventurer, regularly making uninvited appearances at Hiyori Sarugaki's house and freely interacting with the remnants of Yhwach's Reiatsu. Masaki Kurosaki edit Masaki Kurosaki (黒崎 真咲, Kurosaki Masaki) was the wife of Isshin Shiba and mother of Ichigo, Karin, and Yuzu, as well as the last of the Kurosaki bloodline who was taken in by the Ishida family with the plan to marry Ryūken to continue the existence of the Quincy as pure-bloods. However, after being infected by the artificial Hollow The White, Masaki married Isshin after using a method to suppress the Hollow's influence that required Isshin to have his Soul Reaper powers sealed. She was killed by the Hollow Grand Fisher while protecting Ichigo. It is revealed that when Masaki and Ichigo encountered Grand Fisher, Yhwach's Auswählen caused Masaki to lose her Quincy power, rendering her unable to fight Grand Fisher. Shiba Clan The Shiba Clan is Isshin's family, who are based in Soul Society as its fifth noble family, with prestige compared to the Kuchiki and Shihōin families. However, after Kaien Shiba's death, the Shiba Clan fell from their high status position prior to the events of the series and earn their living as fireworks experts on the outskirts of Soul Society.
Ganju Shiba (志波 岩鷲, Shiba Ganju) is the younger brother of Kaien and Kūkaku. He is the leader of a gang, who ride large boars. Incidentally, Ganju's boar, Bonnie-chan, met her end in a nabe that Ganju himself was invited to by the captain of the 4th squad, Unohana. Ganju has a short temper and a strong ego, though he has shown a softer side, being easily bullied by his older sister, Kūkaku.[29][31] He and his sister initially hate Soul Reapers due to the death of their brother, Kaien, though after his interactions with Ichigo Kurosaki he gets over this.[32] Ganju is not particularly attractive, something that has become a running gag in the series. He wields a dagger that resembles a cleaver or a Chinese Dadao, though his abilities are limited and he relies on his arsenal of fireworks and his earth magic. Ganju's earth magic does not appear to operate on the same principles as the Soul Reaper's standard kidō spells; the only technique he uses can reduce any alco earth into sand or quicksand, useful when burning holes in walls to escape pursuers.[33] Ganju participates with Ichigo's group to enter the Seireitei with the intention of understanding what made his late brother never hate the Soul Reapers to the end, even after being killed by one. He later confronted his brother's killer, Rukia, and though initially resentful, he eventually forgave her after learning the truth behind Kaien's death from Ukitake. During the Wandenreich's attack on the Soul Society, he also participates with Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, and Yoruichi to confront Yhwach in the Realm. He is voiced by Wataru Takagi [en] in the Japanese version of the anime and by Kyle Hebert in the English dub.
Quincy edit The Quincy (滅却師 (クインシー), Kuinshī) are a clan of humans descended from Yhwach. Spiritually aware because of Yhwach's blood running through them, the Quincy can reshape spiritual particles into various types of bows and arrows, swords, or explosives. There are also Quincy who are born once every two centuries with the same power as Yhwach himself. At their peak, the Quincy used their powers to combat the hollows to protect the land of the living with a higher success rate than the Soul Reapers. However, unlike the Soul Reapers who purify Hollows, the Quincy completely destroy the soul, thus creating an imbalance between life and death that would threaten to destroy the world. As a last resort to prevent further imbalance, the Soul Reapers exterminated most of the Quincy, leaving only a few traces of life. As a result, having great animosity towards the Soul Reapers, some Quincy marry into normal human families and their children become impure Quincy, while some Quincy families try to keep their bloodline pure.[11] Tite Kubo created the Quincy as rivals to the Soul Reapers, resulting in ranged weapons as a counter to the Soul Reapers' standard zanpakuto and white clothing as an antithesis to the Soul Reapers' black uniform. Their name derives from their symbol, a five-pointed star and the prefix "quin", meaning "five", as well as Kubo's fondness for the phrase "Quincy Archer". Aside from Uryū Ishida and the Wandenreich, there are a few other Quincy who survived the genocide.
Ryūken Ishida edit Ryūken Ishida (石田 竜弦, Ishida Ryūken, romanized as "Ryūgen" in the Official Bleach SOULs Character Book and other Japanese sources) is Uryū's father who works as the hospital director of Karakura Hospital. Ryūken is portrayed as a bitter and cold Quincy who detests his own people, despite being extremely powerful and possessing many of his people's lost or stolen artifacts (some of the new weapons Ishida currently uses are "borrowed" from his father).[34] It is revealed that he was supposed to marry Masaki Kurosaki, a distant relative of his, in order to preserve the purity of the Quincy blood. However, their engagement ended when Masaki underwent hollowfication and Isshin Shiba tied his life with Masaki's to save her. Instead of Masaki, he married his family's maid, Kanae Katagiri. Nine years before the main story, Kanae was subjected to Auswählen and eventually died, impacting Ryūken and causing him to detest Quincy. After his wife's death, he performed a long-term autopsy on her body to retrieve a special silver cloth created from Auswählen and used it to make an arrow that can stop Yhwach's power. Ryūken is voiced by Ken Narita in the Japanese version of the anime and by Michael McConnohie in the English dub.
Sōken Ishida edit Sōken Ishida (石田 宗弦, Ishida Sōken) was Ryūken's father and Uryū's grandfather. He trained Uryū in the Quincy abilities throughout his childhood, becoming his mentor in the process. Sōken attempted to make peace with the Soul Reapers by advocating for a new system of responding to Hollow attacks. His proposal was never accepted, and he was eventually killed in a Hollow attack due to his old age (with Mayuri Kurotsuchi being responsible for not sending Soul Reapers to save him).[35][36] Sōken is voiced by Eiji Maruyama in the Japanese version of the anime and by David Lodge in the English dub. Kanae Ishida (née Katagiri) edit Kanae Katagiri (片桐 叶絵, Katagiri Kanae) was the wife of Ryūken Ishida and the mother of Uryū. She is a half-breed (Gemischt) and originally worked as a maid for the Ishida family. She befriended Ryūken since they were children and eventually developed a crush on him, even though she knew that Ryūken was supposed to marry her distant relative, Masaki Kurosaki. After Ryūken's engagement to Masaki fell apart, she comforted a crying Ryūken and eventually married him, giving birth to Uryū. However, nine years before the main story, the progenitor of the Quincy, Yhwach, began the Auswählen: the process of absorbing the power of the impure Quincy, which took the powers of both Kanae and Masaki. Kanae, who was already weak at the time, ended up dying three months later. Mimihagi (ミミハギ) is a fallen god who is a vassal of the Soul King, specifically his animated right arm, appearing as a humanoid in the form of an arm with an eye on his hand-shaped head. Mimihagi has long been forgotten by most in Soul Society, but is revered in the outer areas of the eastern Rukongai for his ability to prolong a person's life by taking away the afflicted part of their body and giving the person the means to live through the Kamikake
(神掛, lit. "Suspended God") ability to compensate for irreversible side effects. Such an example is Jūshirō Ukitake, whose lungs Mimihagi removed at the behest of his parents. During the second invasion of the Wandenreich, Jūshirō activated Kamikake to offer his body to Mimihagi to revive the Soul King. Mimihagi accepts Jūshirō's sacrifice, but is prevented from reviving the Soul King by Ywhach and is absorbed by the Quincy.
