Born on February 12, 1937 in San Diego, California. During his high school years, he played American football as a midfielder.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1955 and qualified for the U.S. Army Special Forces in 1957. In 1959, he was hired by the Central Intelligence Agency.
In 1966, Adler joined the Special Events Department, and in 1967 was assigned to MACV-SOG to investigate Soviet activities in Vietnam.
On January 26, 1968, during Operation Broken Jaw, Adler discovered minor information that hinted at the existence of the legendary KGB agent Perseus. Shortly after, he defended the Ripcord firebase along with Lawrence Sims and other MACV-SOG operatives until they were able to extract the nuclear device from the base.
After Vietnam, Adler disappeared and only appeared in the CIA archives from time to time, but continued to participate in a number of covert operations. His deep knowledge of secret tactics, fluency in Russian and German, and espionage skills made him one of the few key operatives the CIA could constantly rely on.
On January 13, 1981, during a mission with Frank Woods in Turkey, Adler discovered that the Soviet agent Perseus had become active, and four days later Jason Hudson instructed Adler to create a team to track down and eliminate Perseus.
