Setsuna (刹那) is a character in The Last Blade series. In many ways, Setsuna replaces Moriya Minakata as Kaede's rival, especially in terms of fighting style. Her official nickname in Japan is "Dark Slaughter Sword" (暗闇の殺戮剣, Kurayami no Satsuriku Ken), while in the English localization it is "The Dark Soul". Her symbols are her owl, Nagi, and her black katana.

Setsuna was a spirit in the Makai (demon world) filled with an insatiable need to kill. When Shinnosuke Kagami opened the gate to the underworld, Setsuna escaped to the human world. Wandering, Setsuna found the body of a baby on a battlefield and possessed it. His power caused the body to grow to adulthood. He killed many until he decided to obtain a weapon. He finds Hibiki Takane's father, a master swordsmith, and orders him to craft him a powerful, unbreakable sword. For eighty days, Hibiki's father neither ate nor slept to create the sword. When he finished it, he passed away. Setsuna continues his massacre as he begins his search for the sealing maiden. He plans to kill her to keep the gate to hell open and ensure he never returns to the Makai.

In his ending, he kills Kouryu and Yuki, leaving the door open for others to enter (however, this is not canon).

A maniacal being, Setsuna loves to kill. He was once a feared spirit in the Makai, and now freely kills those who cross his path. He feels no remorse for shedding unnecessary blood, and seemingly tolerates only the company of his owl. He seems to prefer fighting, not only to avoid being expelled to the Makai but also to satisfy his bloodlust and prove himself the best.

He is proud, cruel, heartless, impolite, and unafraid of defeat, but ironically fears death if he is subjected to it. Even when defeated, he refuses to accept the fact and curses the fate of all those who triumph over him. Furthermore, his favorite words usually relate to death, and his defeat dialogue with Yuki has a threatening tone.

Although he's dangerous, maniacal, and evil, he still retains some positive qualities within his ruthless heart, such as his owl companion. If he slices opponents in half, he usually tells them not to die so quickly and somehow praises the soul of the one he just killed, though he usually complains about not knowing the meaning of life and seems generally quite depressed.

Possession - Setsuna can enter the bodies of dead beings and reanimate them. Body Maturation - Setsuna can mature a possessed body to physical perfection. These are the powers he uses while in his physical form:

Dark Energy - His sword is infused with dark energies and will leave arcs of negative plasma when slashed. Dark Electrokinesis - Has some power over electricity due to its origins in the Makai. Electrical Attacks - Can infuse his sword and hands with dark electricity. Electrical Protection - He can infuse his entire body with dark electricity. This makes him invulnerable to physical attacks for a short time. This protection gives him enhanced resilience and prevents him from flinching when damaged, making him even more formidable in combat. If he wants, after using this power, he can channel all the electricity in his body into a powerful attack that paralyzes and shocks his opponent for a short time, leaving them open to another attack. Summon Lightning - He can summon lightning from the sky and transform it into dark electricity. He can absorb lightning energy and enhance his electrical protection power, making it last longer than usual and drastically increasing his resistance to damage. Soul Damage - Captures an enemy's soul within a mirror and crushes it. This move is very reminiscent of Orochi's own attack, which also damages the opponent's soul. Fighting Style Concerned only with killing his opponents, Setsuna has little regard for technique and finesse. He uses a variety of powerful, sweeping slashes and rapid leaping attacks to subdue his opponents, occasionally adding lightning-based strikes into the mix.

In one of the many cases of balance issues, Setsuna is considered powerful in any of the styles.

In Power mode, Setsuna's basic attacks and simple combos into Specials are more than enough to wear down an enemy. In Speed (or better yet, EX) mode, Setsuna's health and attack resistance are reduced, but her attack damage with chain combos into Specials reaches near Power levels. Her access to her SDM move in EX is the reason Setsuna's Speed mode players are underpowered.

His anti-air grab cannot be relied upon as a true anti-air attack compared to his true anti-air extender combo, but it is effective for a damaging corner attack, especially after a power kick, followed by a wall bounce.

Additionally, his Super Armor is a game-changer, a critical table-turner, and sometimes a way to avoid knockback from single attacks. Because his basic attacks often hit twice, attacking with his Super Armor active gives him some insurance against counterattacks and helps him become nearly unstoppable, as long as the enemy isn't performing multiple attacks at once. His Super Armor is a liability if he's caught off guard.

He feels no remorse for unnecessary bloodshed and initially only seems to tolerate the company of his owl. The human body Setsuna inhabits has a youthful appearance and a dark complexion, along with his signature white hair.

His attire consists of a traditional grayish suit and a purple coat with white details and his already known black katana. He is a radical and cruel assassin whose only desire is to kill, he seems to feel no remorse when killing and enjoys fighting to satisfy his great thirst for blood and feed his ego, although despite this he does not fear defeat, he does fear death if it comes to him.

Although he is intolerant and detests almost all forms of life, he seems to treasure the company of his owl, and is also, to a certain extent, compassionate towards the souls he kills.

Setsuna is a formidable opponent who uses a wide variety of powerful sword slashes and jumping attacks, often involving electric attacks.

He is a difficult character to counterattack and is extremely powerful both in Power where his combos and specials cause terrible damage, and in Speed where although his health and resistance are reduced, his combo chains reach a damage similar to his Power version.
