Shadow has a reserved, focused, and serious attitude, rarely taking things in a humorous way. He is primarily goal-oriented, and can reach varying levels of morality for his missions, taking on the role of an anti-hero. Shadow possesses a large ego, and is usually very confident in himself and his abilities, even smirking confidently at his skills or when challenging his opponents. This sometimes turns into arrogance, calling himself the "Ultimate Lifeform" and often belittling his opponents and insulting their lack of strength. He believes that no one can beat him and tends to view anyone as a fool for challenging him. Shadow also has a ruthless and unrelenting edge in combat that most other characters in the series do not have.
