In 1958 the United States discovered that the Earth was surrounded by radiation belts.
Scientists were worried that this could affect astronauts and spacecraft, so they came up with a plan: to detonate a nuclear bomb in space. In 1962, near Hawaii, they dropped a bomb into space that was five hundred times stronger than the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. People thought it would just turn into a sparkle in the sky, but when it exploded, the sky was as clear as day for 15 minutes. It created a magnetic pulse so strong that it cut off radio stations, set off emergency sirens, and turned off all street lights. The explosion also created a new artificial radiation belt on Earth that lasted for ten years.
