Paracelsus is known for his radical rejection of the prevailing medical practices of his time, especially the dominant works of Galen and Avicenna. He famously claimed that "Galen is dead," and he criticized the overreliance on ancient texts. He believed that true healing required empirical observation and that the use of chemicals, minerals, and metals could cure diseases—an approach that was revolutionary for the time.

He also believed in the power of alchemy, seeing it not as a mere mystical pursuit, but as a way to understand the fundamental nature of the body and the universe. His work laid the foundation for the modern field of pharmacology, advocating for the use of chemicals in treating illness rather than traditional herbal remedies alone.

Paracelsus was a strong believer in the concept of balance—the idea that health results from a harmonious balance between the elements in the human body, and disease comes from an imbalance. This belief mirrored his broader holistic view of health, where mind, body, and spirit were interconnected.

Paracelsus was born in the town of Einsiedeln, Switzerland, into a family of physicians. His father was a healer, and his mother came from a family of doctors as well. Paracelsus was well-educated and studied medicine at the University of Basel in Switzerland, where he was introduced to classical Greek and Roman medical knowledge. However, rather than adhering to the conventional methods of his time, he would later challenge them.

He traveled extensively throughout Europe, studying and working with various healers, scholars, and alchemists. Paracelsus absorbed knowledge from both conventional academic sources and more mystical, esoteric traditions, including alchemy and astrology. His early studies were deeply influenced by these fields, which he would later integrate into his medical philosophy.

Independent and Rebellious: Paracelsus rejected many traditional teachings of the time, especially those of ancient Greek medicine, like those of Galen and Hippocrates. He believed in direct observation and practical experience over book knowledge.
