Kim Taehyung was born on December 30, 1995 in Daegu, South Korea, and grew up in Geochang-gun. He is the eldest of two siblings; he has a sister and a younger brother. He began aspiring to be a professional singer in elementary school, so to achieve this he began taking saxophone lessons, with the support of his father. He became a Big Hit trainee after passing an audition in Daegu in 2011.

After graduating from Korean Arts High School in 2014, V attended Global Cyber University, graduating in August 2020 with a major in Entertainment and Telecommunications. As of 2021, he is pursuing a Master of Business Administration at Hanyang Cyber University.
