Kinuyo Nishi

Kinuyo is a student at Chi-Ha-Tan Academy and also the overall commander of her tank team. She drives a Japanese Type 97 Chi-Ha. Kinuyo is very popular among her peers and the nation. Her female classmates have been known to take any opportunity to get close to Kinuyo, purposely letting their hair down so she can braid it, as well as another instance where they chased her, after mistakenly understanding that charging at her would get them a kiss from her. Nationwide, at least one article has been written about Kinuyo's beauty, and several of her classmates have mentioned her popularity in the country. Kinuyo is not tech-savvy, having to learn from Fukuda about using the internet.

Kinuyo is a 1.58m tall girl with mid-back dark brown hair with square bangs hanging on the right side and a pair of brown eyes. She wears a Chi-Ha-Tan commander jacket, a variation of the standard Chi-Ha-Tan jacket, with a white collar instead of a red one. Under the jacket she wears either a T-shirt or a sleeved shirt. On at least one occasion, and to the joy of her compatriots, she has forgotten to wear the sleeved shirt. As footwear she wears a pair of jockey boots.

Kinuyo is a smart and polite girl, who seems to love learning new things, as she gets excited when Miho tells her what the phrase "Panzer Vor" means. She is a self-assured person and is even quite competitive at times, however she sometimes seems to get lost quickly when there is too much movement in combat. Her teammates don't seem to listen to her much and usually attack when she orders them not to, also her communication skills aren't the best as when her tank's radius breaks just as the Duck Team tells them to retreat, she mouths it and interprets it as "attack" causing them to be shot. She is also somewhat forgetful when Darjeeling informs her that the team composed of Ooarai will be composed of 22 tanks in total, while she brings 22 tanks from her school showing that she has somewhat forgotten what she has informed her.

However, she listens attentively to Fukuda's plans, which shows that she is open-minded. Despite her popularity, she remains polite and generous, without becoming conceited or arrogant because of her fame. This is seen when she willingly braids Fukuda's hair, and shows embarrassment after realizing that an article has been written about her beauty. She is noted to take failure very seriously and is extremely sensitive. When reporting tank casualties, she exclaims "This is embarrassing!". Furthermore, she bows and apologizes to Miho Nishizumi when reporting Chi-Ha-Tan's poor performance during battle. Lastly, when Tamada accidentally attacks her, she interprets this action as Tamada saying that Kinuyo's orders during the battle were poor and useless. This has her on the verge of tears and about to hand over command to Tamada. In combat, she expresses a strange level of military formality, reminiscent of the behavior exhibited by soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces. This can be seen in the way she reports to her superiors, as well as the formal apologies and returns of thanks throughout the film. In the drama CD, she is shown to have a keen interest in foreign languages and history, as she helps her friends with these subjects. She seems to have some skill as a teacher or tutor, as she shows her classmates how to use Japanese memorized phrases to remember Western history and vocabulary. In the drama CD, she appears to be leading the class that Tamada, Hosomi, and Fukuda are assigned to.
