In 1947, Cave Johnson founded Aperture Fixtures to manufacture curtains (the name "Aperture Fixtures" was chosen "to make curtains more hygienic"). However, judging by the awards in the old research lab where Cave Johnson is first photographed, his first awards were in 1943.

In 1956, the Eisenhower administration signed a contract with Aperture to produce shower curtains for all branches of the U.S. armed forces except the Navy.[7]

From 1957 to 1973, the company primarily produced shower curtains, which were a huge success, making Cave Johnson a billionaire. Aperture did not use the ad system until 1973.

During this time, development began on the first Aperture Science Portal Gun, which was originally called the "Aperture Science Portable Quantum Tunneling Device". The first version proved too bulky to use effectively, while the portal surfaces were deadly to navigate through. Repulsion Gel was also developed during this time.

Initially, only the most prominent individuals (astronauts, war heroes, etc.) were selected for testing, but after an incident involving the disappearance of several astronauts in 1968, Aperture Science began recruiting homeless people for testing. Since 1976, Cave Johnson suspects Black Mesa of spying and stealing several inventions. They also blamed them for their bankruptcy. (The Propulsion Gel was developed at the same time.)

In 1974, Cave Johnson was exposed to toxic Conversion Gel made from moon rocks.
He ended up ordering that after his death he and his wife be put into a computer.
