Sanji (サンジ, Sanji?), known as Black Leg (黒脚, Kuro Ashi?) and born Vinsmoke Sanji (ヴィンスモーク・サンジ, Vinsumōku Sanji?),[3] is the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates, as well as one of the leading officers of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. He is the fifth member of the crew, and the fourth to join. He was born in the North Blue, being the first crew member not to be originally from the East Blue.

Born as the fourth son of the Vinsmoke family, and thus one of the princes of the Germa Kingdom, Sanji was exiled from his country and disowned his family, going to the East Blue and going to work as a cook on the Baratie, until he decided to join the crew. He is considered part of the Monstrous Trio (怪物三人組, Kaibutsu San-ningumi?) alongside Luffy and Zoro; and, as such, is one of the strongest fighters of the crew. His dream is to find the legendary sea known as All Blue. After the events of the Whole Cake Island Arc, he obtained a bounty of Belly 330,000,000, making him the third highest in the crew, surpassed only by Jinbe and Luffy. Despite having renounced his family name, the World Government still recognizes him as part of it, with his birth name being on his bounty poster.

He currently holds a bounty of 1,032,000,000 Belly which he obtained after the events of the Wano Country arc, being the fourth highest bounty on the crew surpassed by that of Luffy, Zoro and Jinbe.

Sanji is a tall man (the 5th tallest in the crew) with a thin build, who keeps part of his face and left eye permanently hidden by his straight blond hair.

Another of the biggest peculiarities of his appearance is precisely in his face, and it also has to do with his eyes. It is precisely his eyebrows, which have an abnormally curved spiral shape in a clockwise direction. The mockery by some of his crewmates in this regard (which almost always comes from Zoro) especially bothers him. After his bloodline factor awakened, Sanji's eyebrows are now curved in the opposite direction, just like his brothers in an anti-clockwise direction.

He always dresses elegantly, and has rarely been seen to do without his characteristic black suit, usually due to climate demands such as when traveling through the jungle in Skypiea or the Arabasta desert. It could be said that the only item of clothing that can vary from his clothing is his shirts, and he has been seen wearing more than ten different models. After the time skip, Sanji now has his right eye hidden (he also shows the eyebrow that is strangely curled to the left) by his blond hair. He has grown a goatee and a bit of a beard. Otherwise he still wears a suit, he has only changed his tie, and his hair has grown longer.

Despite being one of the crew's physical powerhouses, Sanji can also be an expert strategist if needed. This was particularly evident in the Little Garden Arc, where he posed as Mr. 3 and tricked Crocodile into believing that the Straw Hats were killed in Little Garden and introduced himself as "Mr. Prince" in order for the Straw Hats to escape from Rain Dinners in Alabasta. In the Skypiea Arc, when he and Usopp snuck onto the Maxim to save Nami, Sanji took a detour and destroyed the main engine, unaware of the engines' backup. During the Water 7 Arc, he went off on his own and waited patiently at the train station in the event that Robin left. With his instincts confirmed of his departure, Sanji left Nami a Den Den Mushi Bebe and a letter of his intentions, though half of the letter was mumbled out of his love for her. What's worse though, the letter's hiding place was very obvious as it was marked in red paint, with a large heart for Nami and a threat to anyone else who read it. During the Enies Lobby arc, he took charge of the fight with Jabra by reminding Usopp that it's better suited to be smart and find a way to help Robin, while he was better suited for fighting on the front lines. He later closed the Gate of Justice, giving the gang a chance to escape the Buster Call.

Sanji also had a fondness for reading books when he was younger and knows of many legends, though most are "fairy tales" unlike Robin's "historical" collection of legends. He had already been aware of the legendary ingredient Elephant Tuna before seeing it. He had also been familiar with the history of Mont Blanc Noland through the book Norland the King of Liars. Through a book on Devil Fruits he learns of the Suke Suke no Mi.

Sanji began cooking at a very young age, despite his family's punishments for it. After fleeing from his family on a culinary ship and being adopted by Zeff, Sanji improved his culinary skills at the Baratie until he became one of the restaurant's most renowned chefs. Thus, Sanji knows how to cook with a quality that is difficult to compare with anyone else in the guild, knowing how to make countless different dishes and specializing in several different cooking methods.

During the time skip, Sanji learned how to use Offensive Cooking (攻めの料理, Seme no Ryōri?), a special type of cooking native to Momoiro Island that focuses on revitalizing or even enhancing the physical qualities of anyone who consumes dishes prepared with the technique. Without focusing on the technique, Sanji's cooking skills have increased considerably over the past two years, to the point where he was able to satisfy the wedding cake appetite of Charlotte Linlin, a member of the Four Emperors known for her picky taste for sweets and desserts. [15]

So far, only two of the 99 recipes have been revealed in detail: Pork Hormone Soup (海ブタ肉入りホルモンスープ, Umibuta-niku iri Horumon Suupu?): A large pot of soup made from pork and with hormones mixed in. It is capable of rejuvenating the consumer's energy and strength. Simsim Cream (シムシムクリーム, Shimushimu kurīmu?): A special type of whipped cream that Sanji made while making a cake to appease Big Mom's anger. According to Sanji, it has the ultimate sweetness. Its taste is so delicious that it can make people who ate it almost die from happiness, as shown with Buche and Capone Bege. Bege described the feeling as being mesmerizing.

Sanji is one of the most powerful members of the Straw Hat Pirates, holding the fourth highest bounty on the Belly Crew of 1,032,000,000, behind only Luffy, Zoro and Jinbe. This has been shown throughout the pirates' journey, where Sanji has repeatedly faced and defeated several of the most powerful, influential and important members of various organizations: Kuroobi of the Arlong Pirates, Mr. 2 of Baroque Works, Satori (alongside Luffy) of the God Forces, Jabra of CP9, and even Sheepshead,[16] a star of the Beasts Pirates, the crew of Kaidou, one of the Four Emperors.

Sanji's kicks far exceed the power of a normal human. The primary source of Sanji's strength and power is his kicks. Sanji possesses superhuman leg strength, as his legs and feet are extremely powerful, capable of shattering rocks and effortlessly defeating creatures much larger than himself (such as Bananawani and Mohmoo). His legs also grant him superior agility and superhuman speed, being able to easily keep up with the super-fast Kalifa despite ultimately being beaten by her (though he stated that he would refuse to fight a woman). Though Sanji primarily fights with his legs, his arms are so strong that they allow him to stand on them, making him more versatile in various situations; he is also capable of doing a one-handed handstand. His body possesses superhuman stamina, having taken powerful attacks to the head and chest repeatedly and coming away only slightly injured from them. He was even able to take a direct hit from Enel's Thor, maintaining consciousness for a while, during which he also mocked his attacker. Another of Sanji's main strengths is his speed, such as being able to escape the human eye, being able to break the neck of a Pacifista easily.

After the two years, his body has become much stronger and faster, being able to snap a Pacifista's neck with a single kick, severely damaging it without showing any difficulty (something he was unable to do before the timeskip) or being able to break a seastone cage with just kicks (as seen in the Episode of Luffy). He is also now able to withstand the pressure of 5000 meters underwater without coating, a depth that would have crushed a submarine. His overall endurance has also increased, as he was seen being able to take direct hits to the head from both Luffy and Jinbe, from both sides at once, with relatively minor injuries. When Sanji was a child, he was weaker than his brothers to the point of being considered a disappointment and a failure to his family. This is due to the drug his mother took during pregnancy to ensure Sanji would still have his humanity, resulting in him having no apparent genetic enhancements, much to Judge's fury. However, during the raid on Onigashima, Sanji noticed, after several uses of his raid suit, that his body was beginning to feel different, and even in some cases "better", which shocked him at the beginning of his match with Queen. [19] Later, while battling Queen, Sanji angrily realized that he might have awakened the same genetic enhancements as his brothers, gaining an exoskeleton and superhuman physical constitution, including accelerated healing. After surviving being nearly crushed to death, Sanji stood up, even with all of his bones broken, shocking everyone as his body "rebuilt itself", after which Queen attacked Sanji with her sword, only for the sword to shatter against Sanji's head, with the latter only feeling minor pain and discomfort as a result. [20] He also withstood several bullets to the head from the Beasts Pirates with no visible damage.[21]

After realizing that his genetic enhancements were finally beginning to be a result of wearing his raid suit, he chose to accept his enhancements, but not before destroying the boat to sever his ties with the Vinsmoke Family permanently. Sanji has become fast enough to the point that he seemed to fade away in front of Queen just before she attacked him. With his enhancements complete, Sanji has shown greatly increased potency in his fighting style, able to take down Queen with immense power[22] and developing combat techniques that would have previously been physically impossible for him.[23] Additionally, Sanji's speed has increased to such a level that he is able to fade away before the human eye, even appearing to have become invisible.

Despite this, Sanji has not shown the complete lack of empathy associated with his brothers' genetic enhancements, as he was horrified when he thought he was responsible for hitting a woman while her powers were manifesting.

Main article: Blackleg style Sanji has learned a martial art known as the Black Leg Style (黒足技, Kuroashi no Waza?) that the pirate Zeff apparently taught him. All of his maneuvers come from his legs and feet, with the exception of the time he used knives while fighting Wanze.

This unusual martial art apparently has some inspiration from the Brazilian martial art, Capoeira, the Korean martial art, Taekwondo, and may have some from the Chinese art, Tan Tui. Inspiration may also point to a French fighting style now known as Savate. Originally developed by French sailors, Savate consists of similar techniques that use the hands to support the body and give greater power to kicks, and is especially useful on a rocking ship. Perhaps for this reason most of Sanji's main opponents throughout the series so far were all martial artists with their own style (such as Kuroobi from "Fishman Karate", Bentham from "Okama Kenpo", Wanze from "Ramen Kenpo", and Jabra from Tekkai Kenpo). As for his actual attacks, Sanji has a large repertoire of specific kicks and techniques that he uses to fight. It should be noted that he does not call out the name of an attack every time he fights someone, except for major events and fights. Most of his attacks are said in French and are usually food/cooking terms that are related in some way to the specific body part of the opponent he is attacking or the nature of the attack itself.

The most common attacks are Mutton Shoot (Sanji jumps and does somersaults and kicks with all his strength in the middle area or the head of the enemy) and Anti-Manner Kick Course (one of Sanji's most powerful kicks with which he attacks vertically or horizontally in a straight line to a usually giant enemy, a typical finishing movement).

Aside from the Black Leg Style, during the incident at Enies Lobby, Sanji demonstrated a new technique called Diable Jambe (French for "Devil's Leg", although it can also be interpreted as Devil's Wind), which consists of spinning at high speed on his right leg to the point that it turns red due to friction. In this mode, everything he hits with his leg will instantly receive, in addition to the force of the kick, an intense burn. Sanji used this ability in his fight against Jabura, in which his attacks were not as effective due to Tekkai (a defensive technique that consists of turning the body as hard as steel). With the heat of this new ability, Sanji overcame his inability to break Tekkai by burning Jabura in addition to the powerful kick. According to Oda, Sanji can use this technique because of his burning passion, which exceeds the temperature of even his own attacks. After the time skip, Sanji is able to heat up his legs without any apparent need for rotation, and can set them ablaze even in the depths of the ocean. He can also set his entire body ablaze to further enhance his attacks.

Ifrit's leg. After activating his genetic modifications, Sanji is able to withstand more powerful flames and use them at the same time as his Busoshoku Haki, creating a more powerful version of the Diable Jambe, the Ifrit Jambe.[26] In this way, his flames turn blue[27] and the power of his general Diable Jambe attacks increases greatly, being able to defeat Queen in a series of attacks.

During the timeskip, Sanji was able to learn how to use Geppo, one of the Rokushiki's techniques, though Sanji calls it Sky Walk. He can literally move through the air almost infinitely by "punching the air" with his legs, preventing himself from falling. He learned this technique on Momoiro Island to escape the Okama who were chasing him. After spending two years on the run from the Okama, his sprinting skills have reached a point where he can "run" underwater, using a technique he calls Blue Walk. Similar to Soru, not only is he not slowed down by the weight of water like he was during the Arlong Park Arc, but he can run as fast as a fishman would swim. He has shown to be able to use this technique even while in Nami's body.

Main article: Haki Sanji has shown the ability to use both Kenbunshoku and Busoshoku Haki, however his specialty is the former, with which he has demonstrated great mastery.[30]

Kenbunshoku haki Main article: Haki/Kenbunshoku haki Sanji's specialty in terms of Haki. This Haki has been used by Sanji on several occasions, showing a fairly advanced mastery of it that even impressed Charlotte Katakuri, currently the most skilled person shown in the use of this type of Haki. Sanji is able to use this Haki to sense the presence of others. He demonstrated that he was capable of using it on Fishman Island, sensing along with Luffy and Zoro the presence of Caribou in the castle and later on Punk Hazard, when Sanji was in Nami's body searching for Kin'emon's torso. He even managed to find the Thousand Sunny with his crewmates on board, in the middle of the sea, when they were being attacked by Donquixote Doflamingo. He was able to sense Nekomamushi from within Bege's body.

Sanji is not only able to sense the presence of others, but also sense their intentions and thus be able to predict their actions as he did with Kin'emon and Viola despite them not showing any signs of them. In Dressrosa he was able to locate and intercept a sniper from 16 meters up before it managed to shoot. However, he was not able to do so with the people he encountered on Whole Cake Island such as Pudding or Big Mom until their wedding day, but he was able to do so later, such as when he managed to dodge a pellet thrown by Commander Sweet Charlotte Katakuri (whose Haki level is so high that she can predict the future), without looking at him and, as stated by Big Mom's son, if he had not thrown the pellet, Sanji would have still dodged the priest's bullet that was just a few centimeters away from him. [31]

Despite his high mastery of this type of Haki, Sanji still does not master the ability.

Sanji has mastered this type of Haki enough to be able to strike the true body of a Logia-type fruit user, as demonstrated by beating Caribou without problems. He was also able to harden his leg during his fight with his father to increase the offensiveness of his attacks, surprising him[32] or to stop Charlotte Daifuku's genius.[33]

Although Sanji had not yet shown many canonical uses of Busoshoku Haki, he began using it as a basis for his new Ifrit Jambe technique.[26]

Sanji is the cook of Monkey D. Luffy's crew. His dream is to find the "All Blue", the ocean where all the fish species of the four seas are found and paradise for any cook. He is the only crew member who comes from the North Blue.

He tends to speak in a very calm manner, even in extreme situations, and rarely acts without thinking. His behavior in many ways can be compared to that of a secret agent. This is reinforced by the fact that he tends to wear a suit and very often enjoys smoking.

Sanji is rather more perceptive than he appears as he notices things about situations that others of his crew miss and often tells people what they need to hear rather than what they want. Thus, he is seen as one of the more hardened members of the crew. For example, when the Straw Hats first encounter Laboon and learn that the whale had been waiting 50 years to be reunited with his crew, it is Sanji who immediately points out that Laboon's crew is likely dead. Sanji possesses an optimistic and idealistic side, his dream being to find a sea that even other cooks consider mythical. Furthermore, even after the abuse he experienced from his family as a child, he held out hope that they might have changed for the better. However, these expectations were futile, but he was more angry than shocked by the revelation, showing that he maintains a healthy sense of skepticism even at his most hopeful. Sanji also showed a high degree of faith in his fiancée, Charlotte Pudding. He is not afraid to show his emotions the moment he feels them, and is entirely capable of crying or losing his mind at any moment. He is a hardened womanizer and constantly flirts with any beautiful woman he sees, having become weak towards women, causing him to suffer from nosebleeds.
