Genya Shinazugawa

At the time of his debut during the Final Selection, Genya was a short young man with a gruff appearance. The space where his eyebrows would have been is constantly furrowed, giving him a permanently angry appearance. His hair is styled in a buzz cut, with only a small patch of messy black hair left to grow on top of his head. He also possessed a large, jagged scar running down his right cheekbone from his ear to over his nose. Genya is seen wearing a sleeveless purple yukata over a simple black shirt with long sleeves.

Later, when seen again in the Butterfly Mansion, Genya, having reached puberty, had a much wilder appearance, having experienced a growth spurt that made him nearly six feet tall, along with large, almond-shaped, inward-slanting eyes with purple irises, similar to Sanemi's. His hair is also much longer, worn in more of a mohawk style, the strands much longer and more visible around his neck. It is also noted that his childlike features were toned down, and he became more muscular and gained many more scars all over his body. His outfit changed to a dark olive green version of the Demon Slayer uniform, over which he still sported his old purple yukata.

When he meets Tanjiro again in the Blacksmith Village, Genya's physical appearance is less intense and intimidating, and while still tall and robust, his more youthful features are visible. Through Hashira Training, his eyes have become softer and less wild.

After consuming a piece of Aizetsu's flesh, Genya acquired many physical qualities reminiscent of a demon. The tips of his hair acquired yellow highlights, his mouth developed fangs, and his eyes became a demonic combination of black sclera and yellow iris.

Genya was initially a foul-mouthed and short-tempered individual; a "lone wolf" who rejected any help from others and showed no interest in being polite or having manners. During the Final Selection, he rudely treated Kanata Ubuyashiki by grabbing her hair and yelling at her due to his impatience, and later provoked Tanjiro Kamado into directly confronting him with physical force in an attempt to diffuse the situation. His short temper and brash way of speaking closely resemble those of his older brother, Sanemi.

He became more open to cooperation during the battle against Hantengu, the High Rank Four, where he worked alongside Tanjiro, Mitsuri Kanroji, and Nezuko Kamado. After a while, he learned to be more sociable and less rude to others, particularly Tanjiro and his friends. Genya also seems to be very confident in battle, telling Aizetsu to focus on him despite the latter having already stabbed Genya with his Yari, and later announcing his name to the demon and declaring that he is the one who will kill it.

As a child, Genya was caring and loving towards his family, looking after them due to his father's abuse and being the second oldest of his siblings. His protectiveness stems from a promise he had made to Sanemi after their father's death, when he declared that it was now his job to be a role model for his siblings and look after their mother. He deeply regretted his inability to save his brothers and sisters after their mother's transformation and largely blamed himself for his own accusation that Sanemi had killed her, despite later acknowledging that he was not at fault and that she transformed into an uncontrollable demon.

During Sekido's near-fatal attack on Genya, he shed tears of regret when he believed he was about to die without ever having the chance to properly apologize to Sanemi for his harsh words, only being encouraged to move forward when Tanjiro rescued him and placed his faith in him. Sanemi's refusal to acknowledge Genya made him insecure when he realized how weak he is compared to his peers. When he is reunited with his brother during their Hashira Training section, he attempts to apologize and make peace with his brother, but is left demoralized when Sanemi berates him after threatening to kill him. His desire to reconnect with his brother was so strong that he confesses his habit of eating demons in order to fight, knowing that the practice was taboo. Nonetheless, he did all he could to aid his allies, even if it maimed him horribly in the process, such as protecting Tanjiro from Aizetsu's Blood Demon Art and playing a pivotal role in the battle against Kokushibo. Despite his brother's harsh reproaches, he held no grudge against him, a belief reinforced by Tanjiro and eventually Sanemi himself.

His abrasive and hostile personality was short-lived, partly due to Tanjiro's influence and camaraderie, and the two would form a deep friendship afterward. Following the attack on Swordsmith Village, Genya is shown to be a much calmer and caring individual, giving a warm smile when Tanjiro tearfully reunites with the now-immune-to-sunlight Nezuko, inwardly congratulating him on his happiness. Later, when Sanemi decides to punch Tanjiro for defending Genya, whom he was also going to punch, the young Shinazugawa begged his brother to spare the Demon Slayer. When he reunites with Tanjiro while he is taking Gyomei's training, Genya thanks him for defending him during the incident at Sanemi's dojo before continuing to teach him about Repetitive Action, before sharing a laugh at Gyomei's expense. At night, Genya offers to help Tanjiro cook onigiri and then asks Tanjiro when his emotions were most unsettled in the past in an attempt to further aid him in his training. When he pauses, Genya immediately apologizes for bringing back disturbing memories and gives Tanjiro more encouragement. Despite his newfound maturity, Genya could occasionally slip back into his confrontational habits, most notably when he punched Zenitsu Agatsuma and got into a fight with Inosuke Hashibira after they had insulted Sanemi and him respectively.

Although it seemed like Sanemi hated Genya, in reality he didn't. He loved him very much... after all, he was his younger brother, but, he only wanted to protect him... although the way of doing it wasn't the best. He just wanted to get him away so that Genya could have a good life without being a demon hunter.

As one of the five to survive the Final Selection, Genya possesses a relatively strong foundation as a Demon Slayer even without utilizing a Breathing Style. His skills were exemplified in the battle against Hantengu, the fourth strongest Upper Ranker, when he sneaked up on two of his clones and successfully shot them both and proceeded to decapitate them in quick succession. When he consumed Aizetsu's flesh, Genya managed to overpower the Upper Ranker, stabbing Aizetsu into a tree with his own Yari and tearing his head off. When Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira, was nearly struck and killed by Zohakuten, Genya, alongside Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado, managed to save her before the attack connected. After gaining power from Zohakuten, Genya became strong enough to lift and throw a gigantic tree without much effort, surprising Tanjiro and Nezuko, and then proceeded to throw 3 more. Genya was also able to tear off both of Urami's arms.

Repetitive Action - A technique taught to him by Gyomei Himejima to help compensate for his inability to use breathing styles. This technique primarily focuses on Genya repeating a set of words or phrases that help him focus on his task properly and to keep his mind clear and block out pain. In Genya's case, he repeats a set of prayers from the Amida Sutra to help him focus and strengthen his mind, as seen when he used this technique to focus his mind after being fatally wounded fighting Aizetsu and to some extent replicate the effects of Total Concentration Breathing.

Demon Consumption and Empowerment: Genya possesses unnaturally strong jaws and special digestive organs that allow him to tear and consume the flesh of demons without any adverse effects and even rip off the bark of trees. Upon devouring demon flesh, Genya temporarily gains demonic characteristics, such as fangs, dark sclera, and unique yellow spikes in his hair. Sometimes, presumably due to how concentrated a demon's blood is, Genya can gain attributes related to the demon he devours, such as when he gained the eyes, hair, and Demon Slayer Mark of Kokushibo, with his shotgun even gaining the appearance of the Upper Rank katana.

More importantly, Genya can become stronger after consuming a Demon, receiving a larger power boost depending on the strength of the Demon he consumes. For the most part, Genya gains an enhanced physical constitution (which compensates for his inability to use Breathing Styles) along with potent regeneration. The physical attributes he gained allow him to outspeed Aizetsu and nearly decapitate him, as well as pick up enormous trees and throw them enormous distances rather easily, and rip Hantengu's arm off. His regenerative abilities allow him to heal after Aizetsu's technique tore numerous holes in his body, though it does not allow him to heal from decapitation, by Nichirin blades or otherwise. It also leaves him vulnerable to Nezuko Kamado's Blood Demon Art, which normally only damages Demons and objects belonging to them.

FIGHTING STYLE:

Dual Wielding: Genya utilizes both a double-barreled shotgun fueled by Nichirin cartridges and a Nichirin Wakizashi mounted on his rear hip. He has been shown to excel at combining long-range and close-range combat against demons. Against strong targets, Genya will usually sneak up on them to fire his shotgun and switch to using his Wakizashi if he fails to do so. Genya has a high degree of marksmanship, being able to shoot Sekido's head off and blow off a large portion of Karaku and Aizetsu's necks. He also nearly decapitated Sekido even while being electrocuted. It has also been stated that he is more skilled in using his shotgun than his Wakizashi.

Double-Barreled Shotgun: Genya wields a Western-style double-barreled shotgun, which he uses to take down targets from afar. Instead of normal cartridges, he fires shotgun pellets made from the same metal used to create Nichirin swords, which allow him to permanently kill demons if he shoots them in the neck. After consuming a piece of Kokushibo's katana, his shotgun took on an appearance similar to the Upper Rank's meat katana, with fleshy veins and eyes, and instead fires meat cartridges.

Nichirin Wakizashi: In addition to his shotgun, Genya also carries a Wakizashi, a Japanese sword with a shorter blade than a katana, with two hollow ovals as tsuba overlapping its core and a dull brown hue for its handguard. Along with his sword, Genya also has a sword sheath strapped to the back of his hip.

Although Genya can't possess any breath, he does his best to be strong and was able to become a demon hunter without having any breath.
