He is a man of average height, with a fair complexion and grey eyes. He has a sharp look and no eyebrows, his hair is a warm grey which he keeps short. His bangs are parted parallel to his forehead in two thick locks, one in the centre and the other on the left side of his head. One of Sanemi's most prominent features is his remarkable physique and the numerous scars that run across his face, chest and arms which he does not hide and keeps as a reminder of how hard his job is and of which he is proud.

Regarding his attire, it consists of the Demon Slayer uniform, being in his case a customized version of his uniform which is black dyed green, having the upper part of it unbuttoned, exposing his torso and his multiple scars. He also has a white jacket, as well as keeps his sword Nichirin on his belt. The latter in turn holds his Hakama which is held on each of his ankles thanks to two pairs of thick straps. Later between the arcs of the Functional Recovery Training Arc and the Pillar Training Arc, Sanemi cut his hair leaving only the center bangs.

Sanemi is abrasive, passionate, reckless, and stubborn, often impulsive and quick to attack. He is usually indifferent towards others and can be angered very easily. The only person Sanemi ever showed reverence to was Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and this was only after realizing that the man was much more than his outward appearance suggested. Sanemi has also shown a hunger for battle, wishing to be able to meet the Demons that are part of the Twelve Demon Moons and proclaiming his eagerness in fighting one of those Upper Moons.

Sanemi's cold, rude, and disdainful behavior is a result of losing too many people he cared about in the past. Later, when he sees those people who have passed away, such as his mother, he can't help but give her a smile so he can see her again. When Genya joins the Demon Slayers on their quest, Sanemi repeatedly ignores him and lashes out at any chance of seeing him, but Tanjiro Kamado is able to tell him that Sanemi didn't really hate him; and in fact still felt the same brotherly love he had for him in childhood. However, this was never openly expressed as he tried to keep Genya away from him and the Slayers so he wouldn't be exposed to danger.

Due to all the losses he suffered in his childhood, Sanemi holds a deep hatred towards Devils and everything they stand for, holding a strong belief that humans and Devils do not deserve to peacefully coexist. When he makes up his mind on this matter, it is extremely difficult for even his fellow Pillars to change his mind. In order to prove his point, he ignored Tanjiro's words regarding the fact that his sister Nezuko was incapable of feeding on humans and in order to prove his point, he risked his physicality by injuring Nezuko inside her wooden box. Even after she does not do so, and Kagaya uses this as proof that Nezuko will not attack humans, Sanemi does not truly accept the Kamado siblings.

However, his behavior is not entirely negative towards his younger brother Genya. This is because as shown by Tanjiro, Sanemi truly cares for his brother Genya and his decision to get involved in something as dangerous as Demon hunting, acknowledging that it was his fault for not being able to protect him when he needed it the most, going so far as to express his wishes that Genya would have left the organization in order to live a normal life and start his family.

General Abilities: Being one of the strongest swordsmen within the Demon Extermination Corps, Sanemi holds the position of Pillar having not only extensive knowledge on how to kill Demons, but also knowing all of their abilities. As such, he has shown to possess incredible fighting skills, an example of which is how he is able to sustain a fight on equal terms with his partner Giyu Tomioka, the Pillar of Water during their training sessions. Sanemi also showed his incredible skills to kill entire hordes of Demons with great ease.

Indomitable Will: Sanemi possesses a fearless spirit and incredible willpower. In his confrontation with Kokushibo, the second most powerful demon in existence, he has shown on numerous occasions his utter refusal to give up, despite the seemingly impossible odds against the demon and the numerous serious injuries he received.

Tactical Intellect: Despite appearing seemingly impetuous and impulsive, Sanemi boasts impressive observation and insight in battle, particularly through action-based thinking.

Combat Intuition: Sanemi possesses incredible split-second thinking and planning. He was able to catch and kill countless demons on his own despite having no knowledge of the Demon Slayer Corps or Nichirin's swords, creating elaborate ways to capture them by arming himself in any way he could and using his Marechi blood.

Versatility in handling weapons: In addition to using his Nichirin Sword with great efficiency, Sanemi has also shown to possess a great capacity for improvisation, being able to use any weapon at his disposal to fight the Demons, also depending on the use of his other limbs to face his opponents.

Marechi Blood: Sanemi's blood was revealed to be one of the rarest types of blood, making it incredibly intoxicating and delicious to demons with an effect similar to that exerted by Catnip on cats. It is also unique due to its intense potency that causes the slightest scent of her blood to immediately cause demons to drool and lose concentration, as her blood was able to affect the strongest of the upper ranks.

Sanemi carries with him a standard-sized and shaped Nichirin katana with a black blade that has an irregular green jaw-like pattern etched into both sides. The tsuba of his katana is in an abstract shape with 8 points with an overlapping pattern; each plate has a forest green core with a silver rim. The hilt of his katana is two-toned, with a white cord covering its upper and lower thirds and a green cord running down the middle. As a Hashira, Sanemi's blade has the words Demon Destroyer (butYaWho? YobutYo殺Ya Akki Messatsu? ) etched into the side. With his katana, Sanemi has a standard sword scabbard that is a dark shade of grey with silver markings resembling scars scattered over it.

Wind Breathing (PleaseYesYo呼Yo吸きゅう Kaze no kokyū ? ): A breathing style that Sanemi learned and mastered under Masachika Kumeno after receiving tutelage from an unknown cultivator. As a Wind Hashira, Sanemi was considered the most skilled Wind Breathing user of his generation. His level of skill with Wind Breathing reminded Kokushibo of the first Wind Hashira during the Sengoku Era, the Golden Age of Demon Slayers.

Sanemi was the eldest of seven children and lived with his parents. His father was abusive and constantly attacked the children and his mother until one day, someone who held a grudge against him stabbed him and killed him. Afterwards, Sanemi and his younger brother Genya decided to help their mother and her family.

One night, Sanemi's mother did not return home, so Sanemi went out to look for her. At some point, he found her and realized that she had become a demon, but was unable to stop her from returning home and killing five of her siblings. However, just before she could kill Genya, Sanemi attacks her through the window onto the street below with a knife in his hand. In the ensuing fight, she gave him the two large scars on his face, and her marechi blood, which disorients demons and makes them act as if they were intoxicated, gave him an opening to finish her off.

When Genya runs out into the street to find a doctor for her severely injured siblings, she finds Sanemi with her dead mother at his feet. Panicked and unaware that the "wolf" that attacked them was her transformed mother, Genya screams and accuses Sanemi of murdering her.

After that, Sanemi abandoned Genya and began hunting demons on his own with suicidal devotion. With no knowledge of Demon Slayers or Nichirin Swords, Sanemi armed himself with a multitude of weapons and fought demons at night, incapacitating and capturing them until dawn, then hanging them to let the morning sun kill them. Despite this crude and reckless battle style, he managed to survive thanks to sheer luck and the unique scent of his blood.

While wandering the land hunting demons, he eventually met a legitimate Demon Slayer, Masachika Kumeno, who aided him and introduced him to a proper trainer. Eventually, during their career as Demon Slayers, the two would meet and defeat Ubume, then holder of the Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki. However, Kumeno lost his life in the battle, and only Sanemi was promoted to the rank of Wind Hashira. By the time of his promotion, Gyomei Himejima, Kanae Kocho, Tengen Uzui, and Giyu Tomioka were already Hashiras.

Embittered by Kumeno's death, Sanemi takes out his anger on the Corps' leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, accusing him of blithely giving orders from above while Demon Slayers bleed and die for his cause. To his surprise, Kagaya takes the criticism gracefully before mentioning Kumeno by name; Kanae then informs him that Kagaya has memorized the names and backgrounds of every Demon Slayer who has died since he became leader. This discovery, and the reading of Kumeno's will given to him by Kagaya, gives Sanemi a newfound respect for Kagaya. Afterwards, he is berated by his fellow Hashiras Kanae, Gyomei, and Tengen with Giyu simply watching them from a distance.
