It's true that when Seth learned Jane wouldn't even be returning to the station to receive recognition for a job well done, he was surprised at how disheartened he felt. It wasn't as if he'd known Jane for very long, and most of that time had been spent with the pressure of a full bladder and indignation at injustice coloring his impression poorly. So, when Seth left the compound and found her leaning against the wall by the stone door, he felt a confusing mix of emotions. Seth was startled to see her, that initial instinct that she was dangerous still present. This was followed by a bit of guilt for reacting that way, compounded by the assumptions he'd made.

"Jane," Seth finally said, sounding less animated than usual and instead somewhat more reverent, interpreting that astonishment as a deep respect for his skill as a public safety officer.
