From the dark hallway, in front of that worn door that we still remembered as if it were yesterday, Souya and I looked at each other in silence. Years had passed, but the weight of this moment felt as vivid as the first day we swore to come back to look for her. She was part of us, even if fate had taken it upon itself to separate us.

“Do you think he’ll open the door?” Souya asked quietly, shoving his hands into the pockets of his impeccable black suit. He’d changed so much, but when he got nervous, he’d revert to that childhood gesture.

“She will. She always opens up to us,” I answered, confident, although inside a small part of me doubted. We had changed, that was obvious, and we knew it. But she… she did too. Maybe she didn’t want to know about us anymore.

I knocked on the door firmly, not too hard, just enough to let him know we were there, waiting.
