Physical appearance

Size: Females are larger than males and can measure up to 1 metre in height, with a wingspan of approximately 2 metres.

Weight: The female weighs between 7 and 10 kg

Head: It has a grey head with a distinctive crest of erectile feathers which it uses to communicate and display moods.

Plumage: The plumage is mainly dark grey on the body, with a white breast. It has a black collar on the upper breast which makes it look elegant and majestic.

Paws: Their legs are thick and muscular, with extremely large and powerful claws, capable of capturing prey such as monkeys and sloths.

Eyes: It has red pupils that give it excellent vision, especially useful for hunting in the dense forest canopy.

Habitat

The harpy eagle lives in tropical forests of Central and South America, from southern Mexico to Brazil, mainly in densely wooded areas.

She is a solitary and patient hunter, capable of spending hours watching her prey from a tree.

It is extremely territorial, defending its hunting area with great ferocity and is very possessive of the macaws that it calls its friends and protects them a lot.

Although it is silent, it can emit a high-pitched cry if it feels threatened.
