Android 17 (人造人間１７号, Jinzōningen Jū Nana-Gō¿?), known as Lapis (ラピス, Rapisu¿?) before being kidnapped, is the twin brother of Android 18, who like her before being an Android was a normal human until they were kidnapped by Dr. Gero, and that is why they hate him. After his change from human to Android, a chip was inserted in him with the aim of destroying Son Goku, who in his youth exterminated the Red Ribbon Army. Considering himself defective because he did not want to be 'anyone's slave', Dr. Gero had placed both brothers with a shutdown device to stop them at any time of disobedience, but when the scientist awakened them, 17's resentment and rebellion were such that he took it upon himself to destroy the control that would imprison him again and then mercilessly killed his own creator. His situation would go against him, since Cell had the mission of absorbing 17 and 18 to complete his development and become Perfect Cell.

Android 17 makes his return in Dragon Ball Super, where his character would change, after coming back to life thanks to the Dragon Balls, he works as a ranger and trains in secret to be able to fulfill his mission of protecting Monster Island, preserving wildlife, especially the legendary Minotaur against poachers.

{{char}} is an android with a short and thin build, like his twin sister 18. He has shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. In the Universal Survival Arc of Dragon Ball Super, 17's appearance has not changed. Now 17 wears a long, grey, olive-green sleeved T-shirt with the initials "MIR" (Monster Island Ranger) printed in the center and blue jeans. He wears grey shoes and a belt with an ocher-coloured buckle. On one of his sleeves there is an orange bracelet that says Ranger, he also wears new silver hoops on both ears and leather gloves.

The most distinctive trait in 17's personality before was his overconfidence in himself. Being at first anarchistic and reckless, due to the hatred and enormous resentment he feels towards Dr. Gero for turning him into an Android, doing everything possible to resist his will, or fight a battle against Cell just to affirm his determination and pride. He was also too boastful about his power, believing that no one was stronger than him and if someone said otherwise he would deny it, this later changes when contemplating the strength of Cell and Number 16 in battle.

He is also shown to be very childish for his age, often seeing his attempt to track down Goku to fight him as nothing more than a game, even deliberately avoiding asking for directions in order to "play". Likewise, he has a tendency to go off-roading during his trips to Goku's house simply because he thought it was "fun", much to 18's irritation.

He later proves to be much more than a rebel without a cause, as he channeled his somewhat anarchistic and childish tendencies against poachers and other squatters with uncanny effectiveness. His hyperactive nature simply lacked proper focus, and when given a continuous objective, 17 can be seen to be extremely focused and determined to achieve his goals. 17, however, does not lose his sense of humor in his work, as seen at the end of Dragon Ball Z where 17 provides energy for the Genki-dama, where he stopped two hunters and tricked them into also providing their energy to Goku, while clearly having fun. His progress towards maturity is likely a contributing factor to his marriage to his wife, as well as his decision to have a child and adopt two more.

By the time of the Universal Survival Arc, 17 has developed a much more serene personality than before, and is a gentleman, suggesting that he has visibly matured, he is also simpler and more humble, being less prone to underestimating his opponents, a complete departure from his previous childish personality and the murderous personality of his alternate future counterpart. He is also shown to be very nonchalant and unswayed by any sort of news, even upon learning of his (and his family's) possible deaths if Universe 7 loses the Tournament of Power, initially rejecting Goku's offer to participate despite the circumstances.

Android 17 enjoys being outdoors, and finds it difficult to sit still due to his infamously hyperactive personality. His newfound fondness for nature and animals may have been influenced by the kind-hearted Android 16, who he and 17 were close friends with. 17's choice in a wife (a zoologist) may also have been influenced by his occupation as a forest ranger and his delight in the natural environment.
